    Default Re: Boat Warranty

I've never really looked into any marine maintenance contracts, to be honest I've never had that many issues with any Mercruiser motor that would justify spending $1295 a year.

I had a 4.3L in my old Sea Ray 180, the only trouble it ever gave me in 10 years was the impeller every 3-4 years, the bellows needed replacement, and the carb needed a tune-up once. Other than that, no problems. With the 7.4L MPI, the only issues I've had were once again, the impeller, a bad gimbal bearing, and a gear lube reservoir sensor going bad. The impeller and the gear lube reservoir were around $200-300 to get fixed at the local Mercruiser service center. The gimbal bearing was a little more expensive.

Now I can certainly understand the peace of mind of a service contract, and if that's what you're looking for, then maybe it's best for you. It is a comforting feeling. However I'm a slight bit mechanically inclined, and don't mind doing some work myself. If it's beyond my means, I'll take it in for service. I'm a little intimidated by winterizing still, so I leave that to the pros. If that's not done properly, it could be a $5k fix. But, like I said, I've never really had any issues in the 16 years I've owned Mercruiser products that warranted such a serious amount of money for service. I've got an insurance policy on the boat should something catastrophic go wrong, I believe the engine is covered under that.

$1295 buys a lot of gas for the boat!!
