Hey Folks: It is in the middle of winter here - going down to - 21 C (approx -5F) and I am still trying to figure out a problem I am hoping you can help me with, cause warmer weather is on the way!
Two years ago the piezo alarm went off taking the boys waterskiing... stopped the boat and found the gear lube reservoir at the low mark. Toodled slowly home (didn't have gear oil in the boat) and of course replenished. Spent the rest of the summer keeping the lube at the proper level. Found that high speed boating would go through a 1/2 liter in ~4 hours....low speed with the girlfriend consumed none at all - no teenagers aboard of course.
So last winter I searched the net and thought I had had it figured out. The Alpha series, because of their design can heat up under duress and the seals blow on the bottom end (according to the url below)..... so I bought and installed a "drive shower"
http://www.driveshowers.com/ that I figured would fix the issue. Didn't replace the seals though. BTW the shower is a slick unit and definitely showers the water onto the bottom end.
No luck.
No sign of oil leakage at any time. Boat sits at a dock, no sign. Low speed no sign. High speed is when the oil gets consumed. Do notice however when I run the bilge that I leave a cloud... not too impressed with my green-ness ....
Anyone else experiencing this?
The theory behind the transom shower is the fact that at high speed the bottom end is not getting enough cool water to keep it cool. As I recall, the Alpha 1 is designed for 15 lbs of pressure max,,, anything exceeding that blows the seals.
So this spring,,, when it is warmer... I will check the bottom end gear oil for milk,,, cannot believe there will be too much as I probably went through 5 litres of gear oil last summer,,, max 150 hours of use. Am considering replacing the seals in the bottom end but look forward to advice from more experienced I/O experts.
Thanks.
