Default 272 steering cable

I am in the process of replacing the steering cable on my 98 Z272. When trying to remove the cable from the guide tube I can not pull it out enough to remove. It hits on the stringer. I know that the entire power steering actuator can be removed but access to the two pivot bolts - especially the bottom one look to be near impossible without removing the engine. I don't have that capability for that and would mean a trip to the mechanic. I wondered if anyone has replaced the steering cable on their 272 and how you went about it? Did the motor have to come out? Thanks on advance!

Hey...I was just wondering if you were able to figure out how to replace the steering cable without taking it into the shop? Also what was the steering cable model and length you replaced with? I have a 98 z272 and this is on my project list. Thanks!

Hi there. Yes, I ended up tackling the repairs myself. It wasn't the easiest job. I did have to loosen the steering actuator to allow enough clearance to get the old cable pulled out of the guide tube on the actuator. This was a bit of a job. There are two big silver bolts with a locking tab on them that hold the actuator in place. One is visible on the top side of the actuator, the other is on the bottom side making it very tough to get at. Patience is needed, because access is difficult at best. There is also a couple pins that will have to be removed to allow the cable to pull out and the actuator to move some. Luckily, I didn't have to remove any of my exhaust components...but if you do, put something over the opening of the Y pipe so nothing happens to fall down into the exhaust.

I bought all of my parts from Marine Parts Source

    Cable Part #: SEASTAR-SSCX15419

I also had to replace the helm as it was wore out

    Tilt Helm Part #: SEASTAR-SHT91610
