I'll be breaking my response up into pieces to give others a chance to chime in.
The theory of gas continuing to pump in after shut down. Not likely. The fuel flow is shut off after the bowl fills up by the needle and seat. As the bowl fills up, the float floats up and closes off the fuel.
The ONLY path for fuel to flow is past the needle and seat.
Let's make a hypothetical
Let's say the fuel is leaking AFTER the needle. The bowl level would drop and the float would drop and the needle would open. Now there is a path for flow BUT, the pump is not pumping since the engine is not running.
If you have an electrical pump, and the electric pump continued to run after shut down, than a definite yes to your theory of gas continuing to flow after shut down. The pump would keep filling filling up the bowl as it drained/leaked down.
Another scenario is if the fuel cell was higher than the carb. A syphen COULD be created and flow could continue. But. Highly unlikely.
