I've searched and read and re-read winterizing. I have a 4.3l Merc Alpha I Gen II. My question is, I've seen two different winterizing methods. One is pulling all the plugs, unhooking some hoses and pouring antifreeze in until it comes out the bottom. The other is much simpler. Hook up the muffs, start the engine,and gravity feed a 5 gal bucket of antifreeze in the engine until it comes out the exhaust side. To me this seems like a no brainer on which one is quicker and easier. With all my looking I've failed to find which is preferred and/or why.

IMO husker there is no quick and easy way to winterize a boat. Winterizing is the last think I want done quickly. But anyway probably the only dif in the 2 you mention is the amount of antifreeze used.
Personally , as far as cooling system prep I drain , use low air pressure , then fill with RV antifreeze(not so harsh on enviorment).
JMO though. There are many ways to do the job.

I was thinking I'd drain the block and manifolds, put the plugs in and suck the RV antifreeze in thru the muffs. I said quick and easy probably because of my engine background. I was an engine machinist for almost 10 yrs so working on them is more easy and fun than anything.

Got ya husker. I don't want anyone to go thru the grief of that spring startup and......wham trashed.
Outta work just fine. Do you fog the engine at the same time then?

I just pull all the plugs and leave them out.
There is no need to put antifreeze in the cooling system once it has drained, air does not freeze.

The way I understand it you do. Wait until you see the antifreeze coming out the lower and then fog it. Fogging seems a little overkill to me on a gasoline engine but better safe than sorry. I saw plenty of alcohol burners(stock car engines) that were locked up with rusty cylinders after a winter.

I did the anitfreeze method last year and we hit 17 degrees.

However, first I run the motor on the muffs til the thermostat opens and the motor comes up to full temp, then I connect my 5 gallon jug of antifreeze. Run it til it comes out of the exhaust and the jug is almost empty.
