What is a shift interrupter switch ?

What is a shift interrupter switch ?
What is its function?
If it's not working, what would be the symptoms?

If it needs replacement, does the engine/outdrive ID # need to be matched with the part?

Coulld a faulty shift interrupter switch be confused with a problem with the shifting cable?

As always, thanks for your responses..

This switch allows the drive to shift back into neutral with less effort. If the switch is defective or disconnected it will be very difficult to get neutral. If the shift cable is bad, it can cause the switch to "over-activate" and stall the engine when you shift. And yes, you need to know your engine/outdrive ser# but... be aware that the more usual cause is a faulty shift cable.

If you want to read a good detailed but straight-forward explanation of the shift mechanism & problem solving click on this link.

Thanks Mikey...

so, if the remote on our boat had a recall, might that be connected - pardon the pun - to this issue, 'cause I don't think that was ever fixed... (Quicksilver 300 classic)

I dont believe the Quicksilver 3000 series control on your boat was involved in the recall as it only covered the units built between June 1994 and Sept 1995. Here's a link to the actual recall notice posted by 'bdbyrnes'.

I have to call Mercury Marine and give them the HIN and Serial #s of the engine and drive, to find out if I have coverage.
