If it was painted it was probably done by a previous owner. Most likely it was clear anodized from the manufacturer. If the anodized coating gets sanded/rubbed off it will become prone to pitting/corrosion. Anodizing is a special coating applied by a chemical mixture with an electrical charge passed through it. It can be re-anodized but that would probably be expensive and labor intensive. If you want to paint right it you would have to sand off the clear anodized coating, prime with an aluminum primer, then paint with a quality paint, ie, not a spray can but a professional paint coating. Least expensive option, clean it once a year and paint it with cheap paint. Hope this helps
