Question Boat trader.com

Anyone use boattrader.com to buy or sell? Im considering listing on boat trader and just am not convinced it is a good use of $110. Seems like a glorified Craigslist to me. But I suppose if it sells it pays for itself... Thoughts/opinions?

Hey Rainman, Im doing good. I have been trying to sale a 2004 Mariah SC21 since June. Im overwhelmed with A-holes wasting my time and just being downright rude and inconsiderate. That is another story though.
Anyway, I seem to get a lot of attention with it when I park it at the lake. I will get calls and people requesting info every time. It is on CL and I have some print outs at local businesses. My neighbor is selling his boat and people walk to my house when they see the Mariah and have a look.

Ive been considering Ebay too. I am just in a weird spot with it. It is out of the 8-10k price range most people I talked to seem to be in. And the other guys with 15-20k to spend want more boat, i.e. a V8 and more upgrades, etc.( Kinda like how I ended up in my new-to-me Shabah 250)

I sell a lot on cl. Yeah people are rude and selfish nowadays. Good luck with selling her. I love my Mariah. It still needs a little work to be a really nice boat. Because the last owner didn't take care of it. I'm sure u read my previous posts and read what I have had to deal with.

I've used the various "Traders" in the past and they worked well... but that was pre-craigslist...
The traders were great "back in the day" but I think their time has passed, and are no longer worth the $$ (considering Craigslist is free). I wouldn't use it unless I needed to (not getting results through word of mouth/sight or Craigslist).

    Just my opinion,

How far away are you listing from your home ?

Im in the Portland area and when i do list Ill post in cities that are within 200 miles of me. I also always list with the words "trade" or "part trade" after my asking price. I dont know why but you seem to get a personal who takes the whole sales process a lil more serious. They have something that they think is of value and many times are easier to deal with. Weird I know. Even though you may not be interested in their trade, it opens up the discussions instead of dealing with tire kickers and low ballers.

As somebody that just sold a boat recently, let me say... $110 for a listing is nowhere near the 10% commission I had to pay to have it brokered through a dealer!! Who, in turn just placed the boat on their website, boattrader.com and boats.com.

I agree with raulston, the traders did have their day, and occasionally you can still find a decent deal on them, but they're tending to get overwhelmed by dealers now. It's not really a private party sales method anymore. However, with craigslist being free, that's definitely a perk, and most people interested in finding good deals head there first. There's also national craigslist searches that your ad will go live on, like searchtempest.com. I found my Z280 that way.

Don't discount ebay... It could be beneficial, if nothing else it's worth a try.
