Default Roaring Noise

1. New to the forum or rather not much of a user but getting there. I have a 2003 5.7 GSi inboard/outboard set up on my Maraiah 245 Deck Boat. I have a roaring noise coming from the back, it goes away when the steering is turned a certain way. I had several things told to me and the majority point to the replacement of the "Gimbal bearing"

Can anyone advise and if the bearing is that a project I can take on, I have the manual and some mechanical savy but never with boats.

2. I've also been using a car application starter instead of the marine, I pretty much replace it every year. When I did have the marine version it did the same thing so I stayed with the vehicle application....Lifetime Warranty (Cheaper). The issue is that the starter starts out fine but over the course of a few weeks begins to lag when engaged to start. Any ideas or suggestions.

Thank you
JC

First off, let me admit I'm a Mercruiser owner, so I'm not claiming to be a VP expert, but I can try and help based on my experiences.

Yes, that definitely sounds like a gimbal bearing, if it stops when turning the wheel. You should get this replaced before the season starts. The gimbal bearing replacement is a pretty intense project, and I wouldn't recommend it as a personal project. Not to say that you couldn't do it yourself, but when it comes to engine and outdrive, (two of the most expensive and most essential parts of the boat), I always leave it to a pro. They'll have the special tools needed, and will make sure everything's put together properly to avoid further damage and leaks. Sure, it'll cost a bit to have it professionally done, but having the peace of mind that you're not going to sink with your family and friends onboard at any given time is definitely a comforting thing, and makes boating more enjoyable.

As for the starter, I'd recommend replacing with a marine grade version. "Marine Grade" parts do cost a bit more, but they're built specifically with spark resistance, to avoid any sort of flame & sparks. Yes, auto parts are definitely cheaper, and can get you by in an absolute pinch, but the first time it sparks in your fuel vapor filled bilge & engine compartment, you may not be around to tell the survival story. I know putting family & guest's safety at risk every time you turn the key isn't worth saving the extra $$ in my opinion. There's a reason the manufacturers insist on marine parts for marine engines. Play it safe!

There was a Napa parts owner here in Alaska who was getting gas at the fuel dock and he finished his fueling and fired up the boat. Guess what happen next, the top of the boat roof exploded off of boat and the man was thrown into the water. I would have expected he had some none marine parts on engine! Stick with marine at any cost. :-)
