surge drum question?

Does anyone know what size drum would be on a 2000 prestige tandum trailer? surge brakes are in the one axle only but it is still in storage so I can't measure it yet.

I have been working on my 2000 prestige. Its getting new axles and brakes.

What parts are you looking for. I have a decent amount of info on the trailer after my problems with said trailer.

Re: surge drum question?

I got the boat last yr and the trailer was in bad shape I put new tires, lights, master cylinder ans all new surge parts up front and new hubs as the tire tried to fall off! bearing where gone. then after I got all that done brake cylinder on one side locked up and would not release at the boat landing, so got it to release 3 hrs later. looks like water was in the cylinder it is rusted so looking to put left and right side all new back plate assembly. then it is off to put new bunk carpet.

great price on boat but trailer ate it up lol

Re: surge drum question?

Im in a similar situation right now. Currently purchasing new axles, brakes, etc. Ill give you some info I have found in the past few weeks.
The axles on the prestige trailer are made by a company called Reliable. They are rated at 3500lbs and have a #84 spindle on them BUT it has an odd sized grease seal for the #84 spindle. Instead of the 1.71 inside diameter seal one would use on a typical #84 the Reliable uses a 1.68 I.D. This simple mix up by the previous owner is costing me a good chunk of change now. The bigger seal was the reason water got into the hubs to do the damage it did. This is important to know because when you buy a grease seal/bearing kit the kits come with the 1.71- I have not found a kit that comes with a 1.68. Also on these Reliable spindles there is a "Wear ring" and it is replaceable. It is a nice feature but every part store I asked about them looked at me like I was speaking Chinese! Pop the old ones off and use some red loctite and an old bearing to basically ram a new ring back on.
As for the brake locking up... That was the straw that broke my camels back! I had one brake lock up on my way to Powell. It got so hot it blew the tire!! At the time I noticed the brake components and the tire were casualties. Upon further inspection the rubber in the torsion axle had also fallen victim to the extreme heat. It got so hot the rubber suspension on that wheel has failed causing it the trailer to now sag.

If I were to replace the backing plates on those drums I do not know the best way to do it. I contemplated going to electric drum or disc. Im not convinced on those uni servo hydraulic drums after seeing how they rust inside the actuator. As it it Im replacing both axles with new American Rockwell axles. Ill have a bit of a write up for that later.

now you have me thinking as I just did the whole hubs I bet that seal is wrong. thanks

Re: surge drum question?

I would hate to assume... I would get the double lipped one as well.
Here is what mine looked like, just so you get an idea!

On a side note: Three of my drums did NOT work because the grease seal leaked grease onto the braking surface!! That is why the one got so hot. Plus... You will be wasting $$$ on new backing plates and pads only to have the leaked grease saturate them.

I somehow made it 750 miles home after buying this trailer. How I did not have some sort of major incident is beyond me. This is the worst one but the others were not far off.
