Bias Ply vs Radials
Hello Everyone: I have a question and thought maybe I could get a few opinions other than my own. I have a 95 Shabah Z212 with a tandem trailer. The tires are F-78/14 bias ply that are cracking at there sidewalls. I'm looking to replace them and was wondering on any imput between bias ply vs radials. I do not trailer the boat much, because it its stored near the water. Only maybe 400-600 miles per year. Are radials that much better for the extra $100 or so of cost? Any input would be appriciated.

Hi Ron,
An excellent question and one that is bound to gererate a lot of debate! So without trying to open a can of worms, here goes my opinion...... Since we Californians are limited to 55 mph, your annual mileage is relatively low and I assume you've had no trouble with your existing tires, I recommend staying with the Bias plys and pocket the savings. Just remember to replace them with another set of properly rated trailer tires and you're good to go. :wink_thumbup: If you're in the mood for a little more reading, I found what I feel is a straight forward article on trailer tires - Click here WetWilly |
Thanks for the input and article WetWilly: We share the same opinion. I'm getting new Bias ply ST types put on later today. ( I also serviced/maintained the trailers bearings ) The reason for the new rubber is I'm trailering my boat up Hwy 4 to New Melones Lake/Murphys area this weekend. The family and I and another family are going camping/boating/winetasting there for the first time. I'll give you a review when I get back. You mentioned in an earlier thread, that you boated the Delta years ago? We will be hanging out there for two nights during the July 4th weekend. I have not run into any Mariahs yet on the Delta this year. We just Love our Z212.
Thanks Again.........Calakeboater |
Hi Calakeboater,
Just looked up New Melones Lake and I got to say it looks like a great spot for camping and boating. I'll be waiting for that review! Till then, WetWilly |
