Engine swap question
Hi Guys,
In my sx20/22 i run a mercury 5.0mpi 260hp engine on a bravo 1. Say i would have this engine swapped with a 320hp 6.2mpi. Would that increase in HP destroy my boat?! In the boat catalogue it says maximum hp for that type of boat is 260... But why? The bravo1 can handle more.. Who can comment this?. The engine sizes do not differ that much so i believe it would fit... What do you guys think? Regards, Lex |
Re: Engine swap question
The Bravo 1 might be able to handle it but the transom and hull may not be able to.

Re: Engine swap question
Not quite. I know enough not to answer a question when i dont have a clue what the answer is to it. :)
I'm suggesting that the boats have horsepower limits because the hull structure or design has a limit on the stress it can handle. If it says 260hp i dont think i would want to push it much beyond that limit. I did once see a guy strap a 150hp Evinrude onto the back of a 14' Grew runabout and then watch it destroy the transom after a couple of hi-speed maneuvers on the water. |
Re: Engine swap question
Agreed. If it was a truck or car... go for it, you could always weld in brackets, beef the frame and suspension up. But with a boat you have well whatever the structure is under the floor. In the case of Mariah- thats structure foam core stringers and no rot hull. They may have reinforced 6.2 boats up more for the torque and HP and most importantly weight.

Re: Engine swap question
When the engine starts spinning instead of the prop you'll know you've gone too far. :D

Re: Engine swap question
ok, clear :) All I needed to hear! I'll stick with the 5.0o mpi! Got a new prop and that absolutely works fine so no more need for extra horses!
