Exclamation Sea Fox Mariah boats -- poor quality?

Hi, MOC members.

So I am leaning toward buying a 2006 SX19, but friends and family with some boating knowledge are raising red flags. They talk about how after the original Mariah went belly-up and owners sold the brand to Sea Fox, the Sea Fox Mariahs had major hull issues and should be avoided.

Now I know the original Mariahs were higher quality than what came after, but it seems to me, from looking at these boats and researching them, the Sea Fox Mariahs are of decent quality, though certainly more value oriented than the originals.

Have you guys experienced any major issues with Sea Fox Mariahs that would have you think twice about buying mid-2000s Mariahs? Of course I will have it surveyed, but maybe that won't turn up any hull issues??

I need to get this pinned down ASAP, so please offer any advice and guidance on this issue!

Thank you!

Adam

I've had both. IMO the sea fox was built to be easier on the wallet and not loaded with options. They share similar components. Instead of offering the MAG motors and BBC's a lot of the seafox come with 5.0 v8 and 4.3 v6 from what I can tell.

    Thanks so much, Motoxxx43.

But in terms of major areas of the boat -- hull integrity, stuff like that -- you didn't experience major problems with the Sea Fox version? I understand it's not as loaded as the pre-Sea Fox ones, but I just don't want to buy a boat that's going to hit some choppy water and puncture a hole in the hull!

Can't say that I did. Have not heard any horror stories either.
Apparently Mariah was recently sold to some Canadian boat maker. Thats the rumor at least. Poke around the SeaFox section. I don't recall reading anything terrible about them. I understand they are more inexpensive than what Mariah used to be but at the end of the day its not a Bayl... I won't finish that word!

I haven't owned a Sea Fox Mariah myself , but know a few people in my travels that have.
They have never said any bad things about hull issues whatsoever. Most complaints have been of interior being "Basic" , or not having many amenities.

There are a lot of members here that have them , and are very happy with them. I have never heard any hull issues arise from any of them.

As with anything , care and maintenance make all the difference.

Actually..... there has been a few threads about hull problems in SeaFox boats. Dudders complained about stress cracks & gel coat bubbles in his 2006 SX18, bailcam & jdecoudres complained about similar problems with R19's (actually jedecoudres complained about a lot of things with his boat), AndyFL complained about hull stress cracks & rotting head-rests in his R18.9 and a number of other owners complained about rotting head-rests.

Thanks one and all for the feedback and info! I'll have the surveyor pay particular attention to any possible stress cracks and/or gel coat bubbles. The SX19 I'm looking at has two seats separated by a motor box in the aft, so no worry about headrests on this model, at least!

If the deal goes through, I'll post some pics.

    Thanks again.

I have a 2006 SX21, and it has been good to me as far as the hull and engine. I had the same issues with the headrests, but other than routine maintenance, I have done nothing but turn the key. It has been a good boat. the Sea Fox Mariah's seem to be equal to my friends Sea Ray.
