SX19 4.3 hard start then no start after cable adjustment

the previous owner had the gear/throttle lever cables reversed. The remote would engage reverse in forward position and vice versa. I removed the remote swapped the throttle and gear cables.

The boat then started and ran, engaged and idled for a while.... and I shut it off. I buttoned everything back up and then it was hard to start. Crank 3 or 4 seconds then it would start sound health idle for 3 seconds then die. I pulled the flame arrestor off and the 2bbl looked ok some fuel could be smelt but I shot two quick spurts down the air horn, same thing crank for a while would start sound healthy then cut off.

I scratched. My had a it fiddle around thinking it might be the cut out before I messed with it I went to go again an wham-o no crank just the sound of a free spinning starter with no revolution of the engine. I spun the motor over by hand ok.. Tried a gain no luck.

I noticed the starter doesn't appear original as its labeled "Sierra" and isn't painted and has some noticeable corrosion on the back case of it. I gave it a thud with a hammer and no luck. I figure the be six went out.

I picked up a mercruiser starter, cap, rotor, wires, and NGK plugs since the secondary side of the ignition is all OE looking I figure cross my fingers hope it's a starter and tune it up a bit. Thoughts?

No loud abnormal noises were heard when it stopped turning over so I think the flywheel is ok.

I put a new merc. Starter in and cleaned up the eyelets on the solenoid. The flywheel was ok and the pinion was ok. I guess the bendix was stuck, the starter looked like crap all corroded. The starter was a Sierra brand?

I also put new merc. Cap, rotor, wires, plugs in the engine. The parts were all original and the rotor button had nothing left to the electrode same with the plugs.

The engine starts first revolution and is ready for my first boat outing Saturday if the weather holds.
