hp rating?
 
I have a 2008 sx19 with the 4.3 Merc.

Can anyone tell me how to determine the horsepower? It's either 190 or 220 but I'm not sure exactly.

I believe the HP ratings are based on how the fuel is fed. Carb or Fuel injection. What I have read on my 7.4L the HP ratings are 310/330. 310-Carburated, 330-MPI. But I am not 100% on that. I'm sure by tomorrow afternoon some of the other guys will chime in and give some good technical advice on the subject.

I'm updating this post; I did some research and am finding conflicting information on this subject. On some sites and forums they are saying the 330hp is the crank HP and the 310 is the prop HP. Some say it is like I originally posted. I hope there is some Merc guys on here that can clear this up!

I would guess it is 190 HP. The 220 HP is in the mpi motor as far as I know. I have a sea fox Mariah with the 4.3. I have told the potential buyers 190.

As for the 7.4 MPI I believe it is 310 HP. Unknown if its at the prop or crank. There are a lot of 7.4 motors. The 4 barrel carb models I have read came with 330. The trade off is the torque, which is what matters in the heavy boats. Something like 470 ft/lbs in the MPI plus more efficiency than the 4 barrel.
Don't confuse the 7.4 with any of the 454 models... They have a lot of different stuff going on. Parts are not so interchangeable.

190hp for the carbed version, 220hp for the MPI version of the 4.3

Yep, 190HP for the carb, and 220HP for the MPI.

EricG- As for the 7.4L , Motoxxx43's got it right. 330HP for the Carb, and 310HP for the MPI. This is why you find a lot of the high performance guys switching back to carb's on the 7.4L.

Well I guess I'm glad I got a carbed version then. Not to mention the MPI's are great until the MEFI computer goes bad. Carbs are easy and cheap to fix/rebuild.
