Throttle/gear lever
I am the third owner of the boat, as the story goes the first owner liked the "pimp" position, so he took the gear and throttle lever off and reversed the cable so towards the bow is reverse and aft is forward. How hard is it to make it "right"?
Can I just pop the linkage off from behind the panel or do I have to remove the entire assemble off the side of the boat then swap them around? I don't like the idea of having something like ... It's an accident waiting to happen |
Re: Throttle/gear lever
Sounds like more than likely they are reversed at the shift bracket on the motor.
Check there first. :) |
Re: Throttle/gear lever
That would be easier wouldn't it :p

Re: Throttle/gear lever
Ok I popped the engine cover looks like the throttle and shift cables go to a bracket on the starboard side of the engine. I suppose all this goofball did was swap the cables from their original position. Therefore, all I would have to do is to remove the cables from the bracket and swap them back. Such as putting the top on the bottom and the bottom cable on the top to restore it to forward=forward and pulling back =reverse? No other adjustments to the drive unit?

Re: Throttle/gear lever
If they did get switched , you need to follow the proper adjustment procedure.
Bravo Cable Peplace Might be worth the money to take it to a Merc Shop to have it done professionally , if you are'nt up on it. They can be a bugger , especially starting from scratch. |

Mercruiser Alpha Shift cable adjustment - YouTube
I think truly what the guy has done- is he disconnected the reverse gear cable and put on the forward pivot. Then took the forward linkage and put it on the reverse pivot. Reversing the cables would then actuate the push-pull action of the lever- therefore, reversing the drive engagement at the control handle. Thoughts? |
Re: Throttle/gear lever
any thoughts?

Re: Throttle/gear lever
That would be my first inclination. Try reversing them and see what happens.:wink_thumbup:

Re: Throttle/gear lever
Finally got out to the boat and tinkered... The linkage at the starboard riser can't be reversed the drive and the control cables have different trunnions. One has a hole in it and is held I with a tit on the lever area. The output drive cable's trunnion is held by a pocket.
So the next thought is that the cable was reversed or located incorrectly at the control lever. So after breaking the "throttle only" button on the lever ( won't come out to remove the handle head and was brittle) it look like the throttle box had been out and apart before. It was tangled in the wiring harness and had shadow marks and scratches on the cover plate. The question to save me a lot of time does anyone have a picture of which cable goes where? There are 2 cable attacment points on earth position. Gven the two positions that each cable and can be in an upper and a lower, than at each of those positions there is a near and far arm. |
Re: Throttle/gear lever
About the only thing I can suggest at this point is to get yourself the service manual for your particular engine/drive setup.
The manuals are available to contributing members here on the site. You can read about the benefits here. Otherwise maybe one of the SeaFox Mariah guys can take a few pics for you. Sorry I can't help you out more lucky.:( |

here is a picture of the back side of my control box on... Well sort this image is off the net. You can see the two cable holes and then multiple linkage attachment points. When I pulled my cable off there was one cable on the upper nearest mounting point and one on the lower outer. there control appears to be a mercruiser commander classic 3000 |
Re: Throttle/gear lever
Looks to me like if you just switch them from say the right side in the pic to the left side , it would change the direction of the shift pattern Lucky.

Re: Throttle/gear lever
Swapped them and the prop now rotates clockwise in forward as viewed from stern and then counter in reverse.. Which seems to be right.. But the boat dies after start up after 3 seconds or so even in neutral... Which was bad enough
Then it was hard to start.. Excessive cranking... Shot of throttle clean didn't help so I thing it was ignition or natural cut out... And then it gets worse..... Then the starter went out... Spins but the motor doesn't turn over and doesn't sound like the starter is engaging the flywheel. So I couldn't continue To fault trace it. I spun the nine over by hand and still no change but it oes spin... I picks up a new mercruiser marine starter... Any thoughts |
Re: Throttle/gear lever
Man , you got luck like me!:(
Might take a look at the shift interrupt switch on the motor side to make sure it's working. |
Re: Throttle/gear lever
I don't believe his Bravo outdrive has an interrupt switch. Is the ignition kill switch on the shifter operating correctly?

Re: Throttle/gear lever
RE starter motor
Inside the motor head there are 3 small gears that run inside a ring, these gears are made of a plastic/nylon type material. chances are you've stripped the gear teeth. |

I messed with that thinking I had accidently pushed it. It is in the "up position" which I think is run. I will be putting a starter in on Sunday. I hope that it just the bendix sticking or that the pinion is shot without damaging the starter and not the ring gear on the flywheel. I think I will be good that mainly because there wasn't the normal sound of mechanical mayhem with teeth being pulled off their casting when it stopped spinning and that its a sierra labeled starter with some corrosion on the end part of the case. So I am hoping it is bad by way of being a cheapo part and water fouled. If so and I still have a stall issue I will look adjusting the interrupt switch on the gear linkage on the starboard riser. Are there any other interrupt switches? I thought I had an Alpha how do I tell? Then I hope its all good for a its first outing as season winds down here in VA. |
Re: Throttle/gear lever
Got the boat up and running... Throttle seems to be working ok... If the weather holds sea trials Saturday
