after market 4 barrel carb.

I just bought a 2006 sx21 from my friend, and he had a new intake and holly 600 carb. installed. I have actually put more hours on the boat than he has for the last 2 years, and I have noticed a back fire through the carb. once and awhile. I think the mechanic installed the distributor 1 tooth off. My question is, will this carb. damage the engine? Now that I have ownership of the boat, I want to fix the timing, but not sure how to tell which way to rotate the distributor. Any suggestions? He has also given me the original intake with 2 barrel, maybe I should just put it back on.

You need a timing light to do the job properly. You can loosen the bolt on the distributer and turn it either way with the motor running and if you have the ear for it you can tell when it is running better but this is not the proper way to do it. The timing needs to be set using a timing light and if you are still having a problem then the carb may be to big for the motor.

you can also change the jets in your carb. This wil not do anything for the timing, but can help with the backfire if you are getting to much fuel.

Honestly, if you are asking questions about timing, you might want a mechanic to teach you how to set points, distributor caps, and use a timing light. It is becoming a lost art.
