Setting up a new boat

I just purchased a 1990 2000Z with the 350 Mercrusier and Alpha 1 outdrive, the previous owner has a 14.25 inch and a 22 degree pitch prop and he installed a hydrofoil on it also. My wife and daughter took it out today and found some issues. The boat is way over propped, it takes forever to get up on plane and for the bow to come down, then once it does come down it will really pick up speed.. I want to pull skiers and some tubes so i am needing the hole shot and i am willing to sacrifice the speed to do it. I have no idea as to what the WOT is, it was to rough to get a top speed today though. I think from all my reading and research I am needing a 19 pitch and some smart tabs, does this look like the correct thing to do?

Also my throttle cables are very stiff and when you bring the controls back to neutral from forward you have to bring it into reverse just a little to get it in neutral then back to the straight up. I have not disconnected anything to see what the cause of the tightness would be. Are those cables possible to be lubed?
I will try to get some boat pictures up soon!!!

Thanks for the help!

You didn't mention whether or not you had a 3 blade or 4 blade prop. I suspect a 4 blade 20" will work well along with the Smart Tabs.

While you are changing props get rid of that stupid 'hydrofoil'. No Mariah should ever have to suffer the indignity of having one of those damm things attached to it.

Your shift cable very likely needs to be replaced. You can read this thread on how to adjust it and/or this link on how to replace it.

The prop is a 3 blade right now. Thanks for the links!

I have been lurking just long enough to know that the hydrofoil needed to come off! I have a new prop and smart tabs on order!:wink_thumbup:
