Spun Bearing?????

Hey guys, I have a 1996 Talari with the 4.3 LX alpha one gen II. I am reading high RPM's at W.O.T. My tach is showing 5500 - 5800 RPMs at W.O.T.

My question is how do I check for a spun bearing? If I put the throttle in gear I can still turn the propeller one direction, but not the other. Should I be able to turn it at all? Is there any thing I can do to test the bearings myself?

Any other thoughts?

Don't , I repeat , don't let that motor turn those kind of RPMs!! Your gonna loose a motor.
Are you referring to the prop hub?

That's normal.
It should lock in the other direction when you stick it in reverse :wink_thumbup:

As for the high revs are you sure that the rev counter is right?
that's 1000rpm over what it should be!
does the engine sound like it's screaming at thoughs rev?
If it is then stop it now you'll brake something (BIGTIME)

If it is reving that high and you've not got a very small prop on it the it could be a spun prop hub or coupler failure

Or your tachometer is reading faulty / incorrectly set. Access the back of the tach and you should find a small wheel thats marked 4 - 6 - 8. Give the wheel a few spins and then reset it at 6. What diameter & pitch prop do you have on the boat?

I'll have to check on that. I do know that it's the original prop from the factory, if that helps.

I thought that made sense.

It does not sound like it's screaming. I think I should check the tach first.

Obviously this sounds like the route I should go first. I'll check it out and get back to you.

Yes, I was talking about the prop hub. Sorry if my terminology isn't correct. I am new to working on boats. Trying to learn.

No prob Floorman ,
Let us know what you find out.
Is this a new issue , or has this been going on for awhile?
Sounds like mikeyt might of hit the nail on the head , hopefully :)

I don't think it was reading high last year, but I've had some issues with the gauges. I think the grounding is causing me problems with the gauges and radio.

I sure hope it's that simple, I also have to get my temp gauge working.

Bad grounds/connections could also cause the tach to read incorrectly.

Still trying to figure this out for sure. I really think it's more of electrical grounding issues than anything.
