Default Yamaha Prop ?'s

Hello everyone. I bought myself a 1994 Barchetta 192 last year. I am taking the time while it is still cold to take care of the little things before we get laking this summer. My boat has the yamaha 4.3 and the yamaha outdrive. I was hoping someone else has one and more knowledge than myself. I am looking to ditch my poor dinged up aluminum prop for a stainless. I am leaning towards a 21p from a 17p. I do not tube or ski, we just get out and run as fast as we can. I am not terribly concerned with hole shot or MPG, but also don't want to suck down the gas or be a total dog out of the hole. I am wondering if I am on the right track? Also, am I stuck looking at only yamaha props or is there something else that fits the hub as well? Any help would be appreciated! And I have to say I have looked around for a few hours and it seems like this is a wonderful resource and have a lot of good people on here. Thanks!

Trevor

    Welcome Irish!
What RPM are you running now with the 17p prop?
Going to a 19p would be feasible , but without knowing your WOT now , I'd shy away from the 21p.
What happens is you will pick up speed with more pitch , but it puts a big strain on the engine and drive if you are running very far out of the WOT range.
I believe you need to stay 4400-4800 rpm with the 4.3 Yamaha. But one of the Yami owners can verify that.
A Mercruiser 15 spline prop will fit the Yamaha drive also. Mercury large case outboard prop will work too , and I think the Honda props interchangeable also.

Thanks Larry. I only got to get it out a hand full of times since I bought it the Wednesday before Labor day. I was running about 4400 RPM's and in rough water I ran about 38-40 by the speedo, this with me, my wife and a full cooler. Then the last weekend we went out, with just me and the half empty cooler, at 4500 RPM's I ran a 44 mph on calm water at dusk. I have been erring on the side of caution on how far to push her without having knowledge of what the boat 4.3 will do without causing harm. Ultimately, if I can gain some better top end without killing my bottom end completely and sucking down the gas I'd love to. Again, any and all feedback is welcome. Thanks again!

    Personally Trevor ,
I'd try a 19p stainless 3 blade. Some of the marinas will let you "test props" , Catch is...... they want you to buy from them.
You could be struggling a bit with the dinged up prop. The stainless will bite the water harder , but I bet it'll still keep you running in the right rpm range. It will give you a couple more MPH but don't expect a lot.
When's the last time it was tuned up?
Check ot these links. They will help.

    Propeller education links.

P.S.: Keep the cooler up front

The motor is say 50 hours on a complete professional rebuild (aka not me!). So I know I don't have a tired motor from being almost 20 years old. I did have the cooler up front until the water got rough and it slid to the rear.....hehehe. I think there is a stainless three blade on my local CL but I wasn't for sure if a Mercury would fit the Yamaha out drive. I don't mind starting at a 19p and going from there especially if it isn't beat up and the price is right. I"ll look at your link momentarily, work calls at the moment. Again, thanks Larry!

    Trevor

Ps---- how sure are you that the Mercury will work on the Yamaha?

You can check prop #s and hub #s if needed on Iboats.com or any other prop site.
