Prop question on 98 Mariah 180
I have a 98 Mariah shabah 180 with a 4.3 L merc. The merc book recommends that the top RPM is 4800. I currently have a 19 degree pitch on my prop and was wondering of a 17 degree pitch would work with no damage to the boat motor. I don't think it would be a problem but wanted some advice. With the 19 degree, at full throttle I believe I'm close to top rpm. Not to familiar with props! I want some more power off the start. Thanks in advance!!

The first thing i'm going to suggest is that you read our "Basic Propellor Rules" sticky located at the top of this forum. It will give you all of the basics on how to choose a propellor.
I have no doubt that your boat already hits the 4800 rpm max with the 19" prop. If you drop to a 17" you will hit around 5200 which is too high for the 4.3 engine. Yes it will give you a lot of jump out of the hole but your fuel economy and your top end will suffer along with causing extra wear & tear on your engine. You could consider a 19" High 5 prop which is aggressively raked and shouldn't harm your top end much while giving you a little more acceleration. The High 5 is a $$$$$ prop though.... |
