torque shift, worth the hassle?
 

I am wondering if there is a resident torque shift expert out there. I have the opportunity to trade for one and have researched it enough to know it is not a very user friendly product. I have a 96 talari z191 with a 4.6 lx. With the stock prop I am getting 45 mph at 4800 rpm w.o.t. The bottom end is a bit sluggish so I was intrigued by the T.S. I have a 4 blade 20 pitch stainless that seems to fit the bill but the pipe dream of a torqueshift is haunting me. I would appreciate any help on this one.

Dont know much about the torque shifters but i'm pretty sure that 4 blade 20" will give you the little extra bottom end that you're looking for with that 4.3.

I am going to the lake this weekend to try out the 4 blade, I am hoping it will be a perfect match. I am still curios about the T.S. but the forums silence isn't very reassuring. Maybe I will just try it out so I can be the Mariah owners club expert on the subject.

When I first learned about the Torque Shift prop about 20 years ago, I thought it was the best idea ever! I asked my dad to look into it - he said "if they're so great, why doesn't everyone have one?" Being a child, I didn't have much of an argument.

I think they're still a great design. But they're terribly expensive and hard to find. And if you ding a blade or two, could be harder yet to find replacements. If I remember correctly, they went out of business maybe 10 years ago.

This sounds awfully similar to "where can I find a replacement windshield for my Mariah?". I think it would be great to have/try, but don't be surprised if it's the first and last TS prop you ever see. You'll also need to "tune" it just right with the different cams to get the right mix of pitches you require (again, the cams may be next to impossible to find).

I have those same concerns, and have found that the aerotech is a much more simple design and requires a lot less tuning but also a lot harder to find. I am trading the guy for a mirage stainless that is too much for my boat to turn, it was a spare for a boat that I bought so I am not into it anything. Its that what if thinking that keeps me interested. Thanks for you and your dads advice I think its pretty sound.
