Xl 2000 top speed
Newbie here... I have a 1990 5.0 alpha one that’s getting 35-37 mph at 4200 rpm and I’m told it should be going faster.

Yep. Was there a specific question?

Re: Xl 2000 top speed
For starters.... the engine could be 'tired' and in need of a major tune-up, prop could be the wrong one (probably needs a 19 pitch 3 or 4 blade), prop blades chewed or bent ?
WOT with the 5.0 should be around 4800 rpms. Read thru one or more of the STICKYS at the top of the Prop Talk Forum for some additional ideas. |
Re: Xl 2000 top speed
Recently installed a new 3 blade 14.25 19 pitch turning point as well as a new shift cable. Tune up will be done shortly. Just trying to get an ideal on what the mph should be around.

Re: Xl 2000 top speed
Okay. I would suggest that boat should top out in the very high 40's but dont count on the speedo being accurate. Only turning 4200 rpm with a new 19 pitch prop indicates you have other (engine / timing) issues to be dealt with.

Re: Xl 2000 top speed
One other thing i just thought of. Have a look at the back side of the tach and ensure that it is set to "8 cyl". If not, do so and give that little wheel a few spins around before setting it. Sometimes a bit of corrosion or dirt will cause them to not read correctly.
