Default 5000 RPM and no go

Had the boat out this weekend for a little fishing and cruising. Noticed that at WOT it sounded like it was really revving high, and the Tach was reading somewhere around 5,000-5,100 RPM.

My top speed wasn't even 40 mph. It feels liek the engine is trying but the prop is just cavitating or having a hard time finding grip. At lower speeds and lower altitudes it is better but still not what it used to be. 2 years ago, I hit bottom and destroyed my SS prop and have been using what I believe is the factory 14P one ever since, black aluminum.

Unfortunately, I don't know the pitch of the SS one that was on it when I bought it.

I'd really like to get some of my top end back without entirely ruining my tube/ski pulling ability. Any idea where to start as a compromise between top and bottom ends?

No, it seems to be fine mechanically. I planned to use it as my spare after I make the decision on the new one.

It does a bit better at lower altitudes and pulls tubes pretty well but get it up high and it just doesn't seem to have the "grip" I'd like it to. With RPM's up in the 5k range it seems like I should have some room to sacrifice RPM's for forward motion...maybe not.

My old prop was a Quicksilver Mirage 3-Blade and it's performance was more ideal for my needs...just don't know what size/pitch it was.

Not sure about the original pitch, but I know when I when from a 14 x 17 4 blade to a 14 x 19 4 blade my boat ran like what you were describing. I could not get over 38 mph. Where the 17 was pushing 48mph. Note I am at 5000' elevation and running a 300 hp motor in my 202. Search the site for props there are quite a few lengthy discussion. There are some stickies as well.

If you take the prop off you should find the pitch stamped on the inside of the hub. Once you've done that then read the STICKYS at the top of the Prop Forum.
