Radar/sport arch - swim platform

5 Attachment(s)
Well I figured I'd start posting my add-on's here so the group could find them easier
As some of you all know I'm adding a arch and swim platform to "OFF DUTY" this off season. The topic started on another thread by Howardz302 but not wanting to hijack his post ill start here.

To recap a bit I've always liked the sport arch, radar arch look on some express cruisers and wanted to add one to this great boat for a different look.

The swim platform is another add I needed (as I walked off the back on my maidan outing last April 56 degree water after the group stopped lol we decided it was a need) but was wanting a different look then the stock one.
Swimplatform.com was the nicest looking but still was looking for a little different look. The offshore/performance boat look was the thing I keep going back to but couldn't find one to fit and the company that builds them wants the boat in there shop (in AZ.) to build one and 3k plus and not real reassuring that they could do it.

Arch: I have most of the tubing bent for it just waiting to finish up some firetrucks that are in the shop now to have room to make the jig that mocks the top rail on the hull to get the start angle right as to not work on the boat surface itself. Welding spots on or in her would not be good no matter how much you cover it happens.
The finish idea is to have a few more speakers mounted in the fiberglass and to have a top that can handle WOT speeds. Also have a place to add wakeboard style speakers if needed down the road for some more volume as we are out of the boat in the coves.

Swim platform : The platform is more complete as I didn't need as much room or extra hands to hold it. The main hoop is 26"x84" 1 1/2" round tube and the floor is 1 1/2"x1" oval tube for a smoother walking surface with the corners having 1" tube arched to make and area for 2 cup holders to be dropped in each side. Playing with clear plexiglass in the corner right now and tint the bottom to give it a smoked look.
As I was ordering material I was concerned and mindful of weight as it was a steel structure and just how much can the hull handle hanging off the back 100# was the goal and as of now I'm at 86# once I add lower braces and paint ill be really close.
The swimplatform.com one is 90#

With all that said does anybody happen to know the thickness of the transom where the platforms mount like this one from swimplatform?

great ideas

I love the forward radar arch idea. I would be curious to know how you are beefing it up to support WOT. Also, what would that run to do?

Csterner sorry it took a bit to get back to ya but was trying to get some pics so you can see how I'm thinking strong enough to handle WOT stress.
Plan is to bolt it right on that 18" flat spot behind the windshield on top and then under side will be a 2"x4"x48" channel like piece bent to match the inside curves of the hull with the 24" long side going forward to help hold the stress of wind and the remaining 6"s in the rear to help when a buddy try's to use it to hold himself up by hold down on the front. And I'm still thinking of a 60" long piece if I can get it to fit.

Cost not sure just yet this is the proto type and have a TON of time in it.
After this one is done I can cut a pattern and cut the time and cost down

Keep in mind These pics are of the main frame that will be all covered in fiberglass

I like everything you mentioned on the arch, I sure hope I still have dibs on the first one....
Love the updates.

Productive day. Arch is all tacked up and ready for a test fit. Ended up doing a 5" rake front to back to help with wind and stepping off the sun pad down to the floor. Being 6'4" hitting my head is common but hoping this will help that.
If it all fits like I measured it should be 7' off the floor at the helm.

Ill know in the morning going to get "off duty" out of hiding and try it on.

Thanks for all the replies glad to know I'm not totally jacking a great boat with a bad idea

can i ask,
Are you going to mount it to a jig before you weld it all up?
heat can do strange things to tube and i'd hate to see this go bad as it looks fantastic mate :wink_thumbup:
( Sorry if i'm teaching granny to suck eggs ;) )

Yes ask away I like having somebody double check my thoughts.
measure 2-3-4 times cut once.
Yes it's in a jig kinda, because this is the proto type it's the jig itself. But it's mounted in a the same form as the hull shape, angles, width and holes for mounting.

Well the arch fit great but unfortunately I was holding the front up in the boat so was unable to get pics of it. But will get some on Sunday when I work on it again.

Did get a couple shots of the platform tho.

Hard work turning into progress! I like it. Is that your personal shop? I could not help but notice a fire engine in the background of one of your pictures.

Thanks moto.
The shop isn't mine personally but I have corner of it with all my fab tools setup there for now. I also have a shop in a business park but we all have our boats stored there in the winter.
Yes you did see a fire truck in the background. My full time job is a firefighter and his shop restores old fire trucks and cop cars. My 48hr days off from the dept. I work on remounting trucks for him to sell to small depts. that can't afford new stuff.

Hard to see much change but I finishes all the fiberglassing yesterday.
Changed the speaker pods a bit. Spread out the transition a little further for a softer look. Now for the fun stuff sanding fiberglass and glazing. Hoping to be in paint Monday.

It does for sure. Im sure if your like me, already your thinking of how you could have done it different with more improvement or features.

Re: Radar/sport arch - swim platform

Thanks,
Can't really say I'd change much. surprisingly This one was planned, designed and lay-out how I wanted and as it turns out it's just what HowardZ320 wanted too. so the 1st one is going to be his. Howard has kinda found me a side jig for my off day from the dept.
I'll have to get mine going (again :-) asap as our season starts here in just a few weeks.
Swim platform is going thru a redesign going to be 6" longer and put it on a lil diet changing to larger flat tube for more comfortable walking area and fewer tubes.

Re: Radar/sport arch - swim platform

Ryan,

The radar arch looks incredible. You have definite talent. I've actually considered buying a newer boat w/ an arch and getting rid of my Mariah for the very reason that it is archless. I would be very interested in one for my Z302 in the future if you would be willing? Again, very impressive work. Thanks for documenting it.

Well its in primer now more sanding and more sanding and more sanding.
Call me anal but there's only one was I can do things for me and sometimes it's so time consuming but the end results pay out.
As you can see in the pics it's a little rough still and the guys at the shop thought it was so smooth it's would be and easy paint, but I'll be sanding for a day or so still.

how do you plan to box/crate that and ship one to me ???

I think Rynovw needs to start making these in batches of 5's....lol
Out of curiosity, how much does the arch weigh?

I do have a buddy that owns a crating company and he ships any and everything you can think of. So getting one to you wouldn't be hard the Oregon :). Hard part is building more with it being almost time for season and building arches instead of using it. Lol.

"5" !!!!!!????? The boss would hang me for sure. Not getting home till 11-12 each night she's ready for this one to be done. No she's amazing and supports me in everything, heck she's the one who bought me this boat.

Andy ill weigh it again but it was 45# before the last layer if fiberglass.
