The long list is growing
Well I have only had Firefly (yes I officially named her) for a little over a week now and even though I loved her at first sight that does not mean I don't want to do anything with her.
The "to do" list (Already added dual battery set up) 1. Water temperature gauge (currently not functioning, but looking at it this Friday) 2. Stereo - I have the head unit now (BIG thanks to Eric) speakers and amp are "in the mail" 3. LED Lighting also "in the mail" - thanks Amazon 4. Some trailer upgrades including new LED lights for it, spare tire and mount (hard part is finding another gold wheel!) 5. Underwater LED's Hoping to have all that done prior to spring launch 2013. (before the naming) http://i386.photobucket.com/albums/o...a/P7211040.jpg (and after the naming) http://i386.photobucket.com/albums/o...184437_577.jpg |
Re: The long list is growing
Alrighty!
Water temp gauge is back! (bad wire, replaced) This weekend is new stereo (Kenwood KMR-550U Marine head unit, Polk Audio 6.5's times 4 and a Polk 10 inch sub to add a little thump, all powered by an MB Quart 6 channel Marine amp.) Oh I will also be adding water proof RGB LED strip lights to the gunwales and front bow as well as under both sides of the dash. (A little mood lighting.) Also probably add the fishfinder/depthfinder while I am wiring all the rest of this stuff up.:wink_thumbup: I will have pics (before and after) when I am done. |
Re: The long list is growing
The official "Pile O' Goodies"
http://i386.photobucket.com/albums/o...221126_819.jpg I simply can't wait. :D |
Re: The long list is growing
hhaa i named my boat Reckle$$ $pending after doing all those pile o goodies upgrades then came the gimble bearing ,shift boot cable, gas tank and floor upgrades!! ;) its definitely
a labor of love |
Re: The long list is growing
Keep us updated on this please. I have the same boat but it's green. I went with green LED's in all the oem spots and it really changed effect and I like it. I would like to add more and I like your idea of adding them under the dashes.
I have the polk db6501's upfront by the driver and passenger seats and the db691's beneath the back bench. I dont have my amp hooked up yet but they sound a whole lot better than what was in there before. I'm gonna be adding the same 10" sub as you and out of curiosity where and how do you plan to mount it? I only have a 4channel amp so I was gonna use it to push the 691's and the sub and just leave the front speakers hooked to the receiver. Im just looking for cleaner sound, I dont need anything that'll make waves LOL Looking forward to your progress. |
Re: The long list is growing
Well I will be working on her this weekend. Hopefully the reports of the engines untimely demise were greatly exaggerated. :D
I will get some pics up soon and any info that might help others. I specifically went with the RGB LEDs so that I could have lighting of any color including red so that I could have some light while underway. I can also dim and flash and run programs if I want to. The wife thought I was crazy till she saw them in action now she's all geeked up to get them in too. More to come - stay tuned. :wink_thumbup: |
Re: The long list is growing
Well the projects are up and rolling. I have the amp, sub and rear speakers in. The head unit is hooked up but not mounted yet. I made a custom console for the head unit so that slowed us down a little. Also started Saturday morning with pulling the outdrive so I could replace the exhaust bellows. That burned a few hours. :shakehead:
So I need to run the front speaker wires and mount the front speakers ... then I will run the LEDs and hook it all up. I am in the home stretch. Pics to follow. :wink_thumbup: |
Re: The long list is growing
Lets get this going.
We pulled the old stereo and stashed it. http://i386.photobucket.com/albums/o...a/100_3058.jpg Then pulled the passenger side kick panel as we were initially planning to mount the sub there. http://i386.photobucket.com/albums/o...a/100_3057.jpg EWWWWW dirty - vacuum please! The kick panel needed a little clean up too. http://i386.photobucket.com/albums/o...a/100_3063.jpg Had to pull the bow seating and cubby as well. http://i386.photobucket.com/albums/o...a/100_3056.jpg Amazing how dirty they get in the places you can't really get to. :rolling_laugh: |
Re: The long list is growing
The old stereo mounting location was ... shall we say ... rough.
http://i386.photobucket.com/albums/o...a/100_3060.jpg http://i386.photobucket.com/albums/o...a/100_3061.jpg So I decided that since I was putting in a single DIN stereo with Ipod interface that I would make a new one. It will have a cubby for my Ipod and LED remote. As well as two switches, one for internal LEDs one for underwater LEDs. http://i386.photobucket.com/albums/o...a/100_3065.jpg Decided to paint it for now, I will vinyl it later when I get a good color match. http://i386.photobucket.com/albums/o...a/100_3078.jpg |
Re: The long list is growing
We decided to pull all the seats to make life easier. Plus we are mounting the rear 6.5's in the base of the back seat. Now I am starting to get excited. :D
http://i386.photobucket.com/albums/o...a/100_3080.jpg http://i386.photobucket.com/albums/o...a/100_3079.jpg http://i386.photobucket.com/albums/o...a/100_3081.jpg So we marked out the circles ... http://i386.photobucket.com/albums/o...a/100_3082.jpg And then cut ... :eek_animated: http://i386.photobucket.com/albums/o...a/100_3087.jpg |
Re: The long list is growing
Fear not ... those holes look amazing with speakers in them!
http://i386.photobucket.com/albums/o...a/100_3088.jpg We mounted the amp to the back or the back seat (remember I only bought marine grade components, so hopefully a little drip here and there won't hurt) ;) http://i386.photobucket.com/albums/o...a/100_3090.jpg My wife took this opportunity to clean, clean, clean oh ... and vacuum. :D http://i386.photobucket.com/albums/o...a/100_3091.jpg http://i386.photobucket.com/albums/o...a/100_3093.jpg http://i386.photobucket.com/albums/o...a/100_3095.jpg http://i386.photobucket.com/albums/o...a/100_3092.jpg Firefly is clean from stem to stern. :) |

OK so I mentioned I wanted to put my 10 inch sub here ... it would not take up any of my storage space and I thought it would look real good. http://i386.photobucket.com/albums/o...a/100_3063.jpg BUT my sub requires almost exactly a 1 cubic foot SEALED box to produce optimal sound ... Soooo it was not going to happen here without some serious crafting and measuring and figuring and making a very strange shaped box that would fit under the bow. SO I SCRAPED THAT IDEA :( I was sad. http://i386.photobucket.com/albums/o...a/cry_baby.jpg My buddy (the stereo guy) just happened to have an old box that was set up for 2 10 inch subs that each sealed side was .... you guessed it 1 cubic foot. http://i386.photobucket.com/albums/o...a/100_3064.jpg It is constructed of MDF and had been sealed and then carpeted so we chopped off the side we did not need and I re-sealed that bare side for good measure and then tucked it in the back corner so we lost very little storage space. http://i386.photobucket.com/albums/o...195149_048.jpg We decided to hook up the Kenwood and test it out with the rears and sub and amp ... http://i386.photobucket.com/albums/o...193918_923.jpg It sounded REAL REAL GOOD ... but I guess I will be "that boat" now cause it's MUCH louder than I thought it would be. :D I guess that's not all bad. |
Re: The long list is growing
It was late, we were tired, we were hungry it had been a full weekend ... so we decided to call it a night. (This was Sunday)
I am headed over tonight to run front speaker wires, mount the front speakers, run LEDs and get the stereo mounted with cubby in place. More to come. |
Re: The long list is growing
Progress is looking real. How does the sub sound back in the engine bay with the hatch closed? After looking around on here and other forums I've read where a lot of folks said with the hatch closed it really kills the sound. I like the idea of installing a 10" in the passenger kick panel and just using a free air sub so I wont have to worry about having a box.

Yes even with the hatch closed. That said, if you find a nice free air sub you like, get it and put it in the kick panel. I just think they look cool down there. Plus, like I said, more storage! |
Re: The long list is growing
Still working on it, but this should give you an idea anyway ... Sorry for the crappy cell phone pics it's all I had handy.

I used this set here - http://www.amazon.com/16-4Ft-Waterpr...+lights+44+key There are lots of options out there. I will go over the install in more detail in the coming days in addition to the light strips I got specialized connectors and wire. Total cost for lighting is in the 50 dollar range. |
Re: The long list is growing
Well illness and the first rain we have had in months slowed me down but the install is now complete. (At least phase one! :D)
First the new mounting plate for the stereo head unit. http://i386.photobucket.com/albums/o...202508_632.jpg Turned out pretty nice I think. I may cover it with vinyl down the road but for this season I will call it good. http://i386.photobucket.com/albums/o...202442_108.jpg And the lights now run the length of the boat. http://i386.photobucket.com/albums/o...202424_567.jpg http://i386.photobucket.com/albums/o...202422_634.jpg http://i386.photobucket.com/albums/o...202355_624.jpg Ok sorry for the cell pics (AGAIN :punch_out:) I will post more of the how-to after I take her out this weekend and have some FUN! |
