I used a two part epoxy "paint" to seal mine once I had the wood all screwed together. Marine plywood is definitely the way to go. The epoxy was pretty optional but I really wanted it to last. I can find you the brand if you want, I bought it off amazon.

System three clear coat kit. Should come up if you search for it. I boug the one that's around 80. I did a solid three coats on the new plywood for the sundeck and had enough left over to throw two coats on the exposed side of my rear seat. I attached a pic of the finished product on the new piece. Make sure you have some plastic pain mixing cups, stir sticks, and cheap paint brushes because you're gonna toss everything after each coat!
