need advice, quickly

Bought a used z210, after purchase something has broken loosed in motor or lower unit or gimbel, maybe the coupling. I'm in south carolina, bought boat from North Carolina. Do I have any recourse?

I would say check local and state laws. Unfortunately it is usually not in your favor! Did you have a survey and water test done on the boat before you bought it?

No survey other than me and my dad going over things. I've bought used boats before and had pretty good luck til now. Feel like I've been had this time.

It's called 'buyer beware'......you bought the boat 'as-is' & didn't have it surveyed.

Would a survey have predicted a coupler about to fail?

Quite likely if the surveyor did his job. Its one of the items they are supposed to check.

Okay so I think the rear motor mount springs collapsed, putting it out of line, destroying the coupler. Pulled the outdrive, u joints look good, splines look good. The 96 z210 seems to have a lot of room once the hood is open and rear couch pulled forward. Would anyone like to take me under their wing to mentor me through this repair? I already have another coupler and know I need a new outdrive gasket kit. I plan on pulling the motor all the way out to clean it really good, clean the bilge, etc. Anything else I can look for to go ahead and address?

I noticed there was oil/water in the drive bellows too? Concerns?

If there's water in there its likely due to a split/crack/hole somewhere in the outdrive bellows or steering bellows. If there is any rust on the bearings/race etc then you will most likely have to replace those items. While you have it apart you may as well replace those items along with the gimbal bearing and use a new gasket set when you reinstall the outdrive. Also, if your trim indicators aren't working then this is a good time to replace those indicators cuz the cables have to be routed thru the outdrive. And..... you may as well replace the impeller if you dont know when it was last changed.

As for instructions, there are a few threads on this site about removing/reinstalling an outdrive and completing the repairs mentioned above and there are a number of You Tube videos covering that same subject. You can also check out this site for a little extra information.

Thanks mikey. We're on the same page about trim indic and gimbel bearing. Thanks for the link too. The u joints are tight but a rusty brown color, brush them off and grease them?

Hoping to learn a lot and pay it forward.
