Re: need advice, quickly

Okay so it may not be the coupler. It is very likely the upper unit only. Took the top cover off and it is all mangled up. So I have been checking ebay and craigs list for used outdrive. What i am finding is that it is easier and cheaper to replace the whole outdrive. New or reman outdrives are over $1000, not in my budget. Anyone have any ideas other than searching for used ones? Any way to tell what kind of shape a used one is in before i buy it?

Help appreciated.

You might not like this, but you are probably better off getting your outdrive reconditioned than putting money into an unknown second hand unit.
That is unless it's coming from a respected breaker and has some sort of warranty.

You've already got one poorly unit, no point in buying another if you can help it!

How bad is yours?

Well I found a complete unit for $300. Ran it on the sellers boat before we removed it to take home. Drive lube was clean. We got it put on with no problems and it runs good. I figured if it lasts a season it's worth what I paid.

I've got a LOT of interior work to do and I have some electrical issues to sort out, just lighting, oh and the tilt and trim gauge isn't reading. The exterior is cleaning up really nicely. Should have a boat worth being seen in by end of March.
