2000 Z260 Steering Cable

Just bought a Mariah and this boat is in great shape. I have found very few problems so far. My main issue right now is the steering. I literaly have to use both hands to turn the steering wheel. I plan on changing both the steering and shift cable before I take it out again. I have all the manuals and I am going to start going through them to see if there is any info on the steering and shift cable parts. Hoping for part numbers or lengths.

Does anyone know what the replacement steering and/or shift cable is for Z260?
Thanks for any help. Looks like it will be a job getting that cable out and replaced.

Your problem could also be caused by a malfunctioning power steering pump or something else in that system. That would definetely explain the difficulty in steering. Be sure to also check the hoses and such on the pump while you check the cables.

Be sure to let us know what you find.:wink_thumbup:

Steering Cable

I replaced the cable on my '93 Z212 for the same reason, as it was very stiff to turn the wheel. I thought I was going to twist the steering wheel off the shaft. It seems the grease inside the cable became hard causing the stiffness and I couldn't come up with a reasonable way to clean it out or add new grease. My steering was a Teleflex rack and pinion setup with a 15 foot cable. It took some effort and contortions to remove the various nylon ties holding the cable in place in order to R&R.

Replaced the cable this morning. The old one was in real bad shape. Wasn't too bad changing it. My arms don't look to good right now though. Took two hands to turn the wheel before and now drove it for a quick spin and can steer with one finger. I did look at the power steering. The fluid looks bad. Very dark. Going to change that out when I get the chance. Not too many projects left before I start taking it out this Summer!
One down and a few more to go.

Do you have to Length and style of the cable? I just broke mine this weekend and have to replace it on my Z260.

Manufacturer, model and length are printed on the jacket of the cable.
