Boat doesnt like to start when hot....

Hey guys....not too sure where to go with this one....I have a 95 Mariah Z202 that doesnt like to start back up after sitting hot for awhile. She starts right up cold no problems but if we crusie around for awhile and then stop at the sandbar for 30 minutes or so and then decide to take off she has a tough time starting back up . Any help would be much appreciated!!!!

thanks!

Re: Boat doesnt like to start when hot....

This is a common problem. Replace the coil and the ignition module in the distributor.

iboats.com works but there are likely hundreds of places where these are available.

Re: Boat doesnt like to start when hot....

Was able to get the new coil put in over the weekend, the actual module is another story! Turns out I was sent the wrong one...guess thats what I get for not opening the box before heading to the boat! Hopefully I can take care of it this weekend. Thanks for the help!

Mine will start right up after sitting at the sandbar, but will stall after a minute and not want to start. Same problem?

Re: Boat doesnt like to start when hot....

Think its a different problem....mine doesnt like to start after sitting but once it starts I am good to go! I changed the ignition coil and that didnt seem to help....need to get an new ignition module I think, but its real expensive so I am trying to find a good deal before I bite that bullet!

Re: Boat doesnt like to start when hot....

Well I updated the module this weekend, started up fine no issues. However after we went to the sandbar and tried to start up after about an hour or so I had to keep the key cranked for a bit before the boat finally caught and started up. That being said it doesnt seem like the new module solved my problem....anyone have any other advice? Vapor lock? Starter going bad? I dont know where to start!

Re: Boat doesnt like to start when hot....

Mine will do this while running Around and starting stopping(ie when starting the motor hen it hot) but if you give it about three quarters throttle to get it more air it starts right up. When it starts it has a nice rich smell lol.

Re: Boat doesnt like to start when hot....

This is a common problem with the carbureted mercruiser engines. I 've been told that fuel evaporates from the heat while it's been sitting.

I open my sun deck for a while and let the heat out while at the beach. Another suggestion was run the blower for a little while after shutdown.

It only happens in hot weather to me.

Re: Boat doesnt like to start when hot....

I have tried opening up the throttle too while starting it but it still takes awhile to turn over...not sure what the problem is.

Re: Boat doesnt like to start when hot....

To turn over? Or it turns over fine but just won't start? if it's turning over slowly like its have a difficult time soininging the motor I would think it's possible that the starter is going bad or the connections and the heat is building resistance

Re: Boat doesnt like to start when hot....

sorry...it turns over but doesnt start right up...I have to keep it turning over for a little bit before it will finally start up.

If you google "Mercruiser won't start when hot", you'll see you're not alone.

Re: Boat doesnt like to start when hot....

Just googled that...thanks! Was trying to decide how difficult it would be to put an inline fuel cooler or insulate the fuel lines (which seems to be the easier fix?) but haven't had much time yet to do the research.

Re: Boat doesnt like to start when hot....

The old hot rodder approach is to remove the mechanical fuel pump, block it off with a plate and replace it with an electric pump. The reason you have to crank the motor so long is the mechanical fuel pump has to refill the empty (boiled off) fuel bowl. An electric pump begins pumping as soon as you turn the key.

Re: Boat doesnt like to start when hot....

thanks for the input...guess I will start researching that to see how difficult it will be! thanks!
