Bravo III skeg repair finally finished
Well I finally finished with the lower Bravo III housing...
Some of you may remember a picture I posted after getting the skeg repaired... if not , here's some refreshers. This is the lower drive when we bought her, we were told that only a little bit of the skeg was missing: http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h2...iginalSkeg.jpg Here's the amount that was need to complete the skeg, just a little bit, huh?? Oh and we had the props redone too..." http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h2...ah/NewSkeg.jpg Well after some sanding and a little Bondo (yes, I said Bondo) to fill in the little imperfections around the wields, some more sanding, a good coat of Zinc Chromate Primer and then Mercruiser Phantom Black...well here’s how it came out: http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h2...edoutdrive.jpg It's not perfect but I'm happy with it and I think you'll agree, it looks a hell of a lot better than it did... Guess what... it held up to two outings this week, the first outing was just a test to see if she would run and to check out all the systems... she did but sputtered at low rpm and died at idle several times and to make matters worse, we had to stay below 26mph (small reservoir for drinking and fishing) . Next came a full speed run at real lake to really see what this Talari could do! Now we all know the speedo isn't accurate but it still felt good to see it top 62mph flat out at 4700rpm so I think she's propped just about right. After running around for about 1/3 of a tank, she purrs like a kitten at idle and no more take off burps (stumbles)! Two other things to work on, first, the steering wheel is a little off so I will need to readjust that and secondly, the trim tab wiring is backwards, so got to flip some connections around. All that's left to do is install the new stereo, fix the streched out netting on the seat backs (I'll document this one because I know a lot of you have the same issue), replace the rubrails and insert and finish some gelcoat repairs. Over all, I very ecstatic with our Mariah! Now next week it's our last trip for spring skiing (the cold kind) and then plans for weekends on the water! Already ordered a couple of new towables from eBay! :wink_thumbup: Now before anyone asks, no I did not get any pictures while running around because I didn't have anyone to do the photography from the shore... next time, I promise! One very happy "WetWilly" P.S. Ok, here is one picture just to prove to everyone that we really do own a Mariah and she does float... The Captain and first mate aboard... http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h2...h/P3280022.jpg |
Looks Great!! Keep us all updated on how the progress goes.
|
That repair looks excellent compared to the before picture. I've got a small chunk out of my skeg also although not as bad as yours was. I'm thinking that maybe i will have a look at repairing & repainting mine now.... :wink_thumbup:
|
Your boat looks incredible! I like it!! Nice repair job too! 62 MPH is great!
I guess our super moderator does in fact own a Mariah!!! Good thing you posted the picture... I think Mikeyt was beginning to think this was some sort of conspirancy pitted by Bayliner owners! |
Nah.....that much damage to a Bayliner and they may as well have written the boat off.

I noticed you mentioned about " take off burps". That is one issue I have been having with my boat, but only when coming off a cold start and I accelerate the first time out. After that it is fine. Did you do anything to correct the burping? I know I will be getting my mechanic to take a look at it come summer. |
"Beano" works wonders.... :rolling_laugh:
|
Repair looks great. Somehting I might be looking into soon as well. I have a chunk missing out of the leading edge on my skeg.
Good to see the pic in the water too. I'd love to have a current picture of mine like that. Unfortunately my slip is still full of ice... :( |

Beano is a natural enzyme supplement that can help you prevent gas, bloating, and other digestive problems after eating certain foods, including vegetables.., :rolling_laugh::rolling_laugh: bugger :D |

Just so you know, Beano only works on the crew and only sometimes :shakehead: and how come you know about Beano Mikey, or do we really want to know?? :eek_animated: Our Talari's "burp" was caused by some old gas in the tank and carb as well as some residual water and gunk in the lines, we tried to pump it all out but there is always a little at the bottom... and I don't believe this Talari has been run in water in over a year or two... We did run the engine on the trailer but it isn't the same as in the water with a load on the motor. Anyway, a half tank of premium, bottle of "Heet" water remover, bottle of carb cleaner and a big lake seems to have cured it! The engine seems to be running a little rich at the moment, but I suspect that will correct its self are we run it more, if not, next job will be to rejet the carb! As for your "burp", it sounds like the cold start circuit or choke assembly may need adjusting depending on whether you have a carb or injection since it clears up after the engine is up to temperature. Good luck and let me know that the fix for your "burp" was, WetWilly |

But what I basically meant was, boat is idling @ the dock, give or take about 5minutes or whatever. We back out of the dock and proceed slowly out of the river. When we get to the end of the river and we can open it up onto the lake... that is when it sputters for a second and it almost dies... but doesnt. Then it roars back to life and goes again and up to plane. Normally I never "hammer" the throttle on my boat. It is a 3.0L afterall. But a steady, smooth drop of the throttle is what I normally do. As for Mikey knowing about Beano ... I guess im not in that age bracket ... yet. |
Thanks guys for the compliments on our skeg! Isn’t it amazing what you can do with Photoshop nowadays… I’m just kidding! :D
Looking back, it wasn’t too bad of a project. I mean the hardest part for me was working on my back and sides while trying to sand the aluminum part of the ourdrive, had to use files and a small grinder (goggles and mask are mandatory here) and man, did my arms get really tired fast! At least the Bondo part went a lot easier but it's been a long, long time since I worked with the stuff, took me a couple of tries until I reached a point where I was satisfied with the results. The most important advise I can give is make sure the area your working on is totally clean, I mean completely free of oil, grease or any other contaminates. If you don't, the Bondo and paint won't adhere properly. I used good old dish soap and a brush for the first cleaning (washed twice) then lacquer thinner. I used a tack cloth between sandings and a last wipe with the thinner before spraying on the primer Another thing, don’t use steel wool on the outdrive, steel and aluminum, not a good mix… use fine grade sandpaper instead. Lastly, make sure to use a Zinc Chromate Primer over the aluminum to protect the metal and to give the outer paint something to “grab” onto. Well, now it your turn to fix up your skegs, WetWilly |
Here is mine: (photo taken in 06)
http://inlinethumb06.webshots.com/40...600x600Q85.jpg Just wondering what it cost you to repair it and the approx # of hours working on it to complete? or was it mentioned and I just missed it. |

Hi 180diablo, Aw, the 3.0... Great engine! Had one in my old Sea Ray! Do you know how long it takes you to reach the end of the river from your dock and what rpm are you traveling at while on the river? Lastly, does your temp gauge indicate that the motor is fully warmed up by the time you exit the river? As for the skeg, the total for everything was about $220 and change. The cost to have skeg restored to it's former size was $150 (metal and welding) and the rest was for the primer, Outdrive paint, hand full of 3M sanding blocks (these worked the best on the Bondo), tack rag, dust masks, etc... I had the metal grinding tools already. The actual time was 1 day for the welding and 4 days to finish the rest because I applied several coats of Bondo, primer and paint; I had to wait awhile between coats. Your time will vary depending on how "perfect" you want it to look. Your skeg is in pretty good shape considering, you can just clean it up and repaint it and it'll be fine! I really don't think you need to see a wielder; you could probably get away with using "JB Wield" to fill in the nicks on the front edge and the chunk out back. If you've never used JB Wield, it is amazing stuff! It's an epoxy and it's tough as metal when dry but you can still sand it, drill it, tap it. WetWilly |

http://inlinethumb48.webshots.com/29...600x600Q85.jpg This photo was from 2003 and I'am standing on top of my uncles dock. The boat that is just heading out, once it makes it around the bend to the right, there are 2 markers there. From there it is all lake. Rpm,.. ummm 1500? 10km/hr is max speed in the river. Temp gauge from what I remember was warmed up. It was definately higher then first started. Quote:

I'll have to try that. I used a ton of that stuff keeping my Turbo-Minivan together. Cheap Chrysler plastic... :rolling_laugh:
I have a chip on the leading edge but it's not much bigger than 180diablo's |
What can I say... JB wield is to me what duck tape is to a redneck! :missing_teeth:
Not to deviate to far from this thread, but I really believe 180diablo, it's got something to do with the manifold/carb temperature or your cold circuit, because it doesn't happen after you get going and that’s when everything gets up to proper operating temp. Anyway, let me know what your mechanic says was the problem... WetWilly |

Cold beer ... err i mean cold circuit.. got it :) I will try and report back tho :) |
Look great! I jealous of anyone who has been on the water already!:worshippy:
|
Thanks for the compliment z275st,
As for being jealous, don't be! I believe it doesn't matter when or how many times your on the water, it's really about how you spend the time when your there! Quality over quantity... good friends, good weather, good food and drink, that's what I'm talking about... :wink_thumbup: WetWilly oops, I forgot to add "and a Mariah" :D |

Now there's a genius after my own heart, sort of like a redneck Mr Bean! Trying to catch my breath, WetWilly |

He made good for himself as a TV star. |
ROFL !
thanks for the vid. What a goofy show. I never did get down to see any tapings of the show @ the cbc building. :( I have made it for two tapings of the Air Farce tho! |

Skeg repair
Hi WetWilly
just browsing through your info on your skeg repair I have a stainless steel Skeg bolted on to the oringinal skeg, i think its an aftermarket bolt on retrofit. i dont know if this is a bolt on repair or just a protector to keep the original in good shape. anyway if my skeg is broken and its a retrofit skeg , the question is did you make your skeg or did you buy it ,shape and fit it to onto your original dying to find out Ed Cossey ::shakehead: |
Hi Ed,
Guess you won't know which way the previous owner went until you take it off. If you decide to leave it on, just check the area around the bolts for any sign of corrosion as SS guard and bolts and aluminum don't mix for very long. This was the incentive for me to have mine fixed. As for our skeg, all I did was prep and paint it. I had the metal repair done at one of our local marinas where we have a gentleman who specializes in metal repair and fabrication. He was kind enough to stop working on another customers vehicle and take care of me real quick, seems I caught him in the middle of fabricating parts for one of Arlen Ness's bikes. He used another Bravo 3 drive to make a template and then cut, shaped and wielded a new piece of aluminum to make up for the missing section. Now you know, WetWilly |
Skeg repair
thanks WetWilly ( guru )
I think the next time im in florida. I'll have a look at it and if my original skeg is damaged i'll find some one who will repair it. the marina where i keep my boat should know of a repair man, they are pretty good at that. I'm a bit worried that it will affect the alluminum or with the vibration from the motor make the fixing holes bigger. I dont realy want to have to buy a new bottom leg. so a repair like yours would be great. best regards ed :wink_thumbup: |
Re: Bravo III skeg repair finally finished
By the way, wow, very nice.
Are you doing complete overhaul of the boat? It there a thread on this. Reason I ask, I'm completely going through min, cold use some good ideas and may also have some to share. |

Re: Bravo III skeg repair finally finished
Hello WetWilley,
I see you went to San Pablo Dam for your first spring run. ( We live near each other ) What big lake did you go to Berryessa? I've been to the delta twice this spring, my Shabah Z212 sounds like yours. Sputtered some at first then nails after that. 55-57 mph @4700-4800rpm with a 4 blade 20 pitch Alium. I was happy with that. I also run a 3 blade SS 19 when I travel to lakes around N. Cal. We need to get together some day, we live to close not to. Hope all is well Ron ( Calakeboater ) |

Please keep us updated on this if i havent already missed the thread somewhere i would like to know how to do this. Thanks. |
Re: Bravo III skeg repair finally finished
Hi Calakeboater, that would be great and looking at the map, it looks like we have three more members in the area, one in Hercules, Fairfield and one up in Folsom (Richardfra with a 272 BR). Maybe we can all get together for some summer fun. We did Berryessa for a day trips and overnight camping . I prefer Berryessa because it's close and it's the third or forth largest lake in NorCal. Only problem is most on the marinas, especially the ones with camp sites were taken over by a new vendor and BLM implemented lots of changes, so for now, most of them are closed. As of last year, only Markley, Pleasure Cove and Steele Park were open. What lakes do you prefer? WetWilly |
Re: Bravo III skeg repair finally finished
Hi Irace82,
Haven't finished the seat back mesh pocket project yet, as a mater of fact, I had to put on the back burner for awhile. So now, I'm slowly getting around to finishing the new seat rails (they hold the sides of the mesh to the seat back) as the originals were either cracked or broken. Next on the list is to remove the worn out elastic at the top of the mesh and sew in a new one (had new elastic but I seem to have lost it) then re-assemble it all back together. Here's a picture of the original rails and the new ones I'm working on. Geez, it's been a long time since I've played with Plexiglas! Well, a few more holes, corners rounded, sides polished and they're ready to go back on! http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h2...s/PICT0807.jpg Hopefully, I'll get it done soon and I will post the process with pictures.
