I've read some threads lately that suggest the trim should not be all the down at 3/4+ throttle. I never knew! Please confirm. I'm an avg. boater and thought trim down was best. Pros and cons to not trimming down? Also, no trim tabs. 5.7 alpha 1. No problems except disappointing top speed. 40mph. 220 95 Talari, 19 pitch stainless prop. Thanks Y'all

Most of the time I do the hole shot with trim almost all the way down but once planed (this happens very quickly on mine) I trim up to get the most speed from the boat. It "lifts the boat" so you don't have as much drag. There is a limit on how high you trim it where you will either lose a little speed or the boat seems to be a little loose (kinda like when you go 120mph on an 1981 Honda 900 Custom) except it will be the back of the boat that seems loose.

Just IMHO. May be a bad description for it but I have spent a lot of time playing with the trim and you find the sweet spot eventually.

Running at speed with your trim down (tucked in) causes your bow to drop which in turn means you have added to your friction in the water thus reducing your speed somewhat. Trimming out gets your bow up and out of the water reducing the 'wet surface' which means less friction and higher speeds. If you are going to do a high speed corner w/out having Smart Tabs or hydraulic/electric tabs then it helps to trim down a bit.

All that said, some boats just dont run well unless the outdrive is trimmed down a bit. Weight distribution, type of prop used, condition of prop, hull design, unclean hulls etc all contribute to this problem. Usually, adding a pair of Smart Tabs will help in this regard. You could also change over to a 4 blade - 20" pitch prop which will provide more 'bite' in the water and get your boat onto plane easier. What are your rpms at top speed?

You have to find the sweet spot! Sounds odd but it is not always the same. Weight, water conditions, weather, etc can all effect the sweet spot.

no matter what the conditions (people, fuel , weather, wind, waves, etc.) are in my boat the sweet spot is one click up or down from the same spot every time.

Yup, sweet spot. My trim gauge is broken for now but you can just tell when you get it...

Wot is about 4800. I'm glad I asked! I guess it's one of those things you never knew unless someone tells ya! Can't wait to try this out tomorrow

Yep, every boat has a "sweet spot". Mine is about 3500 rpms and as 'doaclnr' noted, you can just feel when everything, including the trim, is right.
