Tilt/Trim

So after a fun filled holiday weekend, I went out on Sat morning on the boat and found out that my tilt/trim was not working. It looks like the switch was stuck in the down position. Gotta love when the little ones play in the boat after you tie it up to the dock. I have tried to use a jump wire from the hot red wire to the blue wire and I get nothing. When I hit the switch I get a click for both up and down and get the same when I hit the trailer button.

I ended up having to drive the boat to the ramp, load it on the trailer and then disconnect the lifters and pull the drive up and secure it with a ratchet strap. Now I am at a loss on what the issue is. I am thinking maybe the motor burned up since the switch was stuck in the down position.

I am thinking of replacing the motor and the switch but I cant find the correct switch anywhere.

It must be trim pump issue month!:(
Mine got rainwater in it from a broke reservoir cap over the last two day rain that we finally got. Now I have to flush the system.:shakehead:

Start here jsewall82.

yeah the fluid in mine looked like strawberry milk. it was nasty. it rained every day, so much that my waterproof marine radio has water in the face. it was like a monsoon had hit.

Re: Tilt/Trim

If it got stuck you probably fried the solenoid.
Did you check the 20 amp fuse at the trim pump?

Re: Tilt/Trim

no, I tried to jump the circuit and it didn't do anything. I am hearing the clicking noise when I hit the down switch or the trailer switch. I will have to check the fuse when I get back to the house.

Re: Tilt/Trim

Before you jump the gun and start replacing parts, why not spend a little time with a volt meter & test the circuits? First thing i would suspect is a bad connection at a solenoid which are located right beside the trim motor. There are complete instructions on how to troubleshoot your trim system in a sticky located here.

I plan on doing a little more research this weekend on the unit but I know I need the switch in the shifter unit replaced.

Your call but if it was me i wouldn't replace anything until i went thru the troubleshoot procedure. More often than not, there is nothing wrong with the switch (unless its been physically broken) and its usually a wet/corroded connection at one of the two solenoids or pump that causes the problem.

Re: Tilt/Trim

the switch sticks in the up or down position. it doesn't "bounce" back like it should.

So I diagnosed the trim/tilt issue. It seems that the trim pump is not working. My uncle, a master electrician and shade tree mechanic, came over and even with the lift cylinder unhooked we could not get any of the hydraulic fluid out. All the electrical is good and is testing the way it should. What's a good place to get a new unit?

You have a Alpha or a Bravo Drive?
Looks like either way , part # is 865380A13.
Merc price is around 700.00. OUCH!
Look on Ebay.
Might try part # 14336A8
Or get a used one.

Alpha one gen ii. I found one for like $300 but I didn't have part # on me to verify

Looks like its not the right one. I will have to do some research. The one I found for like $700 is saying I have to buy adapters for the hydraulic lines because the one I'm replacing is a 1996.

You need to use the serial number from the drive to find the right one , it sounds like to me.

Looking at my drive serial number, 0F692395, it looks like this is the right one.

I just ordered it and they are over nighting it to me. What kinda fluid does it use? That way I can have everything ready once the part arrives.

Use at least 3 qts to flush the system.
Do a search , there is various ways members are doing the process.
Take a look here for a little more info.
