rain water thriugh air intakes
Hi,
I bought a 182 recently which I haven't launched yet. however I have just noticed a design fault with the stern engine compartment air intakes. Rain water is running down the cover and the air intakes are directly in the path of the water. It doesn't take long for the bilge to become quite full. (not in the UK anyway) I guess the obvious option would be to extend the boat cover with 2 additional letter box size flaps which would cover the vents. just wondering if anyone had any other simpler solution? cheers Lewy |

I would say 2 things, 1 would be to keep your drain plug out when it is on your trailer. If yours is slip kept, then I would buy 2 bilge pumps and 2 batteries! :)
Also, if kept on a trailer, make sure that the tongue is raised so the water will flow aft and out your boat. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD |
Re: rain water thriugh air intakes
I suspect it was a "whoever designed/installed the cover" fault rather than a boat design fault. My cover goes over the vents. And one of those 'intakes' is an exhaust outlet (or should be) for your bilge blower.

Re: rain water thriugh air intakes
your right, it is a new replacement cover, however the company that provided the new one simply used the existing factory fitted poppers.

Are there no back boxes on the vents?

Re: rain water thriugh air intakes
Our custom-made mooring cover does not cover those, either. And, sure enough, when last summer we left the boat stored with the mooring covers on, instead of the trailing cover (the mooring cover is easier), we ended-up with a bilge-full of water.
Oh well, at least I was finally motivated to clean the bilge ;) Duct tape? :rolling_laugh: Jim |
Re: rain water thriugh air intakes
I've never paid attention to my buddy's 180 Diablo - but he keeps his stored at the local boat club all summer.. he has had to replace his battery a few times. I bet his cover is allowing the bilge to fill up - thus killing his battery from all the running it does. I will have to talk to him and see if that could be the problem because he's been concerned that something in the boat is sucking his battery dead, or shorting them out.

I just feel the slight downward angle of the box means that heavy rain fall will quickly fill the box allowing water in to the boat over the top of the half blanked off openings or even down the blower ducting. i'm going to re-mastic the sections to see if that makes any difference. Lewy |

I didn't notice you are also in the UK :wink_thumbup:
for a quick fix you could do what I've done. but like I've said I have a Cheap £60 eBay cover that goes over the lot  http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/v...murfboat/1.jpg http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/v...616_212905.jpg http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/v...616_213113.jpg |

I have the same issue with my 98 202. I finally got a slip at our boat club and sprung for a new snap cover. It also used the snaps that were already in place and it doesn't cover the rear vents. Luckily it's on a lift and covered fairly well from the elements but occasionally if the rain comes in just right, it will get into the vents. |
