Out Drive Gear Oil

I have a 94' Talari 240Z, I am finally going to be getting it out this weekend.
Before I go I am going to change the engine oil and filter as well as the out drive oil.
Has anyone ever used regular gear lube for cars and trucks on their out drive?

Thank you,
Ace

If it isn't marine rated............don't use it unless your looking to buy a new drive
I use Royal Purple HPM , but it is definately for marine applications.

Re: Out Drive Gear Oil

I like this topic!! I started out doing a bunch of reading into oils in hopes of using something other than the Mercruiser/quicksliver stuff. Then I took a moment to think about why? I really could not come up with a good answer other than just because OR to be different OR the off shore guys run brand X OR it is more affordable. I know for a fact there are some really good oils out there. Like Colorado said, if it is not marine rated I would not consider it unless it was a temporary get you from A to B fix. You can read into all the independent tests out there and see which oils out perform this brand or that brand. Fact of the matter is I dont have a high horse power, high speed, high maintenance set up. My oil gets changed once a year not after every other outing. After many nights of reading I choose to go with a product that is readily available and is recommended for Mercruiser: the Mercruiser performance oil.
Yeah, it is expensive compared to the auto stuff but then again so is rebuilding an outdrive!

Why yes, one of our members did that. And he's out rebuilding his engine this weekend. Dont screw around with lubricants. Use the recommended stuff!

My neighbor used non-marine stuff in his, worked fine for the first 4-5 hours and now the boat is sitting in his garage for the rest of the summer because he can not afford to replace the outdrive not to mention the damage it did to the engine.
