Default The Good the Bad and the DANG this boat sure looks nice.

So we took firefly on vacation over the holiday weekend. It was a mixed bag. Here's the breakdown in reverse order...

DANG THIS BOAT LOOKS GOOOOOOD

I got comments from several people that were also camping and boating about how nice the boat looked.

The BAD

Prior to Friday/Saturday I had never tent camped in a hurricane. I do not recommend it.
It wasn't THAT bad I am being a bit dramatic, but Friday night and Saturday morning were not "FUN". It was an effort in getting through it. But we got through it and neither the tent nor the boat blew away in the HIGH winds. (And she was properly covered, so no wash out)

STILL having issues with her running right. She starts and idles, purrs like a tiger, even runs great at low RPMs, she planes good, BUT extended planing and she bogs and then will not get good RPM's again. Never dies, never quits, just bogs, drops off plane and then has to "rest" before she will get up on it again. And just to say it one more time, when this bot gets it THIS BOAT FLAT GETS IT!!!
(So any ideas? I'd be thankful to hear them)

THE GOOD

Loved all the modifications, LED lighting, new stereo, and the new exhaust bellows ... all worked out well. We got out we had fun, we boated, we swam, we hung out and partied with the lights and stereo. We made many other boaters jealous. All in all it was a fantastic weekend. Oh and did I mention I grill some mean steaks and bacon cheese burgers on the open fire? Cause I do, you can ask the wife.

Hello there, sounded like a great vacation! Haha. As for your bog, it may be you coil going bad. As it warms you'll lose voltage. After it cools it'll act like nothing ever happened, until it heats up again. Give that a try. Hope it helps.

Sounds like a decent enough time. We waited out the hurricane and I BBQ'd some ribs at home Saturday before boating Sunday. I did ride my motorcycle a little Friday evening though, so now I've ridden in a hurricane. It was pretty interesting how well the storm held together until it got up here to us then, it just stopped and sat here for 24 hours.

Yea after the summer we've had I never expected to get anything legit out of this storm. BOY was I wrong.

But we have stories to tell and we lived through it and we didn't kill each other, it brought us closer together.

So all in all it was fun, And I will look into a straight tune up, points, plugs, cap, rotor and coil and see if that helps. It just really strikes me as a fuel related issue.

    Really has me stumped

The all red ones make me drool!

The bog...unfortunately there are a host of things that can cause a motor to bog.
Have you cleaned out the fuel system completely, all filters (carb filter, water separator, etc), the fuel pickup inside the tank if it has one. Boat fuel tanks are known for having that collection of gunk and syrup in the bottom that clogs the intake screen and the pickup tube. Contaminated fuel??? Now with the addition of ethanol to the fuel, the problems only increase.

Process of elimination. After you "know for sure" that you're getting a fresh abundant supply of gas, then move on from there...complete tune up...

Like Dozer mentioned, I would be looking at that coil too.

Thanks for the reply. (and the kudos on the other thread, made me blush )
I have changed the filter and water separator (the one on there was an evinrude brand) so I had hoped that it was the culprit. I also found one of the throttle wires was loose while I was installing LEDs (I mean REALLY LOOSE almost disconnected) so I took her out on the weekend in the hopes I'd made progress.

I will check the coil and if that don't do it I guess next up would be the tank and fuel lines. I just want her to run good (ok is acceptable) so I can limp through the rest of the season, worry about major stuff while the snow is falling.

    MW,

Did you get your bog figured out last fall?

Hey BLS, nope I have not. I got a little work done on her in the late fall but it's been VERY cold and VERY snowy here in the KC area all winter. Including the last 4 weeks!?!?!
So, I will get back on it here in April or maybe May the way it's going (forecasting MORE snow on Tuesday/Wednesday) And then, ultimately it will take getting her on the water to see if anything I have done helps.

But thanks for checking in. Did you have an idea that hasn't been addressed or are you having the same issues and hoping I had insight?

    Take it easy!

Well, neither. It's more selfish, I wish I had some advice for you. I haven't had any experience working with i/o's. I'm going to start compiling a list of items to check by problem (symptom).

I've had two boats, my first was a 1978 (ish?) 16' Glastron Carlson that I bought when I was 17 because the trailer had nice rims (Cragars). It looked like this (kind of the 'James Bond' boat from the movie where they are jumping everything):

One summer, in high school, we took it out every morning to ski before going to work (laying concrete). Topped out at about 37. Then, I hit a rock (remember, I was 17) and it took a chip out of all three prop blades. After that, it topped out at 41! Learned about pitch after that...

My current boat is an outboard also (I've had for 7 years), so I'm reading all the threads I can for when I find my next boat (Z275 or Z302). I'm hopefully going to look at a Z275 next week!
