Questions about 1991 mx20 mariah

Need some advice. I'm looking to buy a 1991 mx20 that was a trade in at a local dealer. The gelcoat and interior are in excellent shape. Engine is a 305 cobra w/omc outdrive. Talked to the original owner, he said the engine had around 1000 hr's on it had regular maintance with no problems so far. The dealer is asking 6100 for the boat can probably get it for around 5500. My question is are the hr's to much for this motor and outdrive and have not heard many good things about the omc outdrive. The boat would be used mostly for just cruising around the lake. Any help i could get would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

1000 hrs on a '91 is a lot unless it was recently rebuilt. If you are really serious then i would suggest having the compression checked by your own mechanic and you need to get the boat onto the water to see if it performs properly. I'm not a fan of OMC Cobra outdrives. IMHO i think $6100 is high for that boat.

Re: Questions about 1991 mx20 mariah

Thanks for the reply. The omc outdrive is my biggest concern, everyone i have talked to about them said the same thing. I myself no nothing about them. I did a search and read an article that said the biggest problem they had around that time was the shifter cable would get out of adjustment and would cause the gears to grind an wear out. I asked the guy that had the boat about it, he said he would adjust the cable each spring and never had any problems. But with my luck that would be the first thing to go an the outdrives are not cheap. Again thanks for the input.
