Default Any shade tree mechanics in KC area?

Interesting development this week....

I am still determining the extent of what I am looking at but I discovered the exhaust bellows needed to be replaced after our last run - and I hadn't had it looked at by a shop after buying it so I took it to a local shop for a check up.

Well it turns out I will be going through everything myself. They called yesterday and told me the engine was "shot" and that I needed to replace it and that it would be about $7500 (yea seriously ) said compression was 1-185 2-100 3-180 4-160 5-175 and 6-165 ... and that they scoped #2 and it was "badly scored". Now mind you this boat flat gets it and was in the water a week ago, never ran rough, idles sweet runs like a top. So lets just say I am skeptical. besides the fact that any "GOOD" shop would have offered a reman and gotten me out the door for less than 4 grand. So I said pack her up I am coming to get her! - Anyway, I will be working on her Saturday morning, gonna go ahead and replace the exhaust bellows, water separator, check the compression myself etc. Either way even IF it needs a new engine I will limp through the rest of the season and have some fun before pulling an engine and missing with all that.

So anyone local wanna give a brother a hand? I am very mechanical with LAND based vehicles but a novice with marine machines. I am certain I can handle all this but would be nice to have someone that KNOWS around. I will need to get my hands on a compression tester, I will buy one but if someone has one to loan it would be awesome.

Not in your area but if you can, find someone to loan you a leak down tester. It'll give you a much better indication of what's going on inside the engine. A generic compression test can lie a lot.

Hey thanks for the reply! I was looking at just buying a compression tester but they have a leak down tester at harbor freight for 40 bucks so I will probably just pick one up and go that route. Might as well have one with a lot of what I am doing for the boat and otherwise.

    Thanks again
