I know the feeling
Just take the cover off the carb so you can watch the hose where it connects to the flame arrestor. If you have another stint of getting warm , pull the thermostat when you get her home and make sure it isn't sticking.
Did you change the fuel filter yet? If not do it.

I didn't change the fuel filter but I removed it and poured the gas from the filter into a container yesterday. Going to check it now.

Well we didn't make it out today due to some bad storms rolling in so I continued my hull wet sanding just above the waterline. Uggg

Read through the Mercruiser owners manual and found out that the 3.0L is rated at 115HP. That could explain the lack of power.

I have a 180 Diablo with a 3.0 L engine. At 4600 RPM (highest recommend for the engine) it will get 38 MPH and at WOT (about 5100RPM) around 42 MPH with a 19 inch prop. With a 21 inch prop I would think the 40 -44 range is right. The engine is great on gas with a great range on a tankful. Things you can look at to improve your situation are: proper trim of the boat, 21 inch prop with loss of power on the low end, use mid range gas and add an additive to offset the ethanol. Consider changing fuel filters, spark plugs, distributor cap and a carb rebuild may be necessary if not done in many years. As for the heat problem I would look at a new impeller. The normal operating temp should be 150 for all speed ranges.

Here are my latest findings. Did a compression test for 3 of the 4 cylanders (need an extension to get to the fourth). Test read 140, 150, 155. I found where the smoke was coming from.... the carb. Looks like the yellow tube which I believe is the blow back used to deliver fuel to the carb rather than the boat??? was clogged as well as where it attached to the fuel pump. I think this means the fuel pump is bad? Only weird thing is I didn't have any hesitation while opening her up.

    Yes sir:

Notice where I have the long screw. That port was totally clogged through to where the fuel comes in from the pump. I cleaned as much rust and orangey gunk out as I could with a screwdriver and that screw. I am not sure if WD40 is a good fit to clean more and remove rust and lube the spring. I would guess not since it is flammable and inside of a fuel pump, is, well.....

Fuel delivery to the carb was fine. Can I clean out this pump and re-use?
