Ignition switch replacement - W,X,Y, or Z?

Just purchased a '94 202 Shabah last week. Slowly but surely bringing her back from the brink after years of neglect.

The ignition switch is giving me some grief with a key that can be difficult to operate. I'm suspecting that it may be a generic replacement. From what I've gathered in other posts, the key should have a Mariah logo on it?

In any case... I've found the contact for a replacement here in the forum since I would like to replace with an 'original', but is there a difference in the W, X, Y, or Z designation that I should be conscious of?

Yes. They are different cut keys. If you are replacing the switch itself then buy 1 or 2 keys to match the new ignition or... check your ignition key to see if it has one of those letters stamped or.......hold your key up against the pic in this thread, match it up then buy a replacement switch and maybe 1 key. That way you can continue to use your existing keys.

Perfect. Somehow I missed that thread.
Confirms that I do currently have a generic ignition switch... and clarifies the w,x,y,z designations.
Thanks for the help!

Hi I bought a 2001 Z222 with an electronic switch as well as a key switch We didnt get a key with the boat We are having trouble with the boat stalling out as if the kill switch is turned off. We want to try to eliminate the electronic switch by getting a key and trying to use the key switch Can you tell me where I can find out what keylock I have, is it written on it somewhere or do I have to buy all four keys to try
any help would be appreciated
Thanks in advance
Regards
Bill

Ahhh....now i comprehend. I dont know of a method to identify the switch but i could suggest that you send an email to Craig (the switch/key vendor) as he has always been helpful rather than just trying to make a sale.

Hi Bill,
I just ordered a new Switch Cylinder Assembly & Keyswitch from Craig, he was great to work with and it only took a few days to get from him.

I am looking at my old & NEW cylinder and there no designation on either one. The designation is only on the Key itself, so in your case you may want to order a complete assembly & Keyswitch. In my case, my old cylinder was failing, so I matched a new Cylinder & New Key with my old key, so at least now I have a spare key.

The entire assembly most definitely costs more than what it would a local marine shop... but seeing that big, bright, beautiful new key kind-of has a "Pretty Cool" factor to it.

Brian
Thanks for your reply I was afraid that would be the case. My son was looking at the keyswitch in the dash and he said its impossible to get his hand in there other then taking the dash off and I know I cant do it with my arthritise so the only other option then is to buy all 4 keys and hope that it is the original switch
Thanks again for all your help
Regards
Bill

I just switched mine. The upholstery behind the dash (in the boat front) on my 2000 Shabah lifts up. This gives easy access to the ignition. My key was like an anti-theft system. You had to angle it JUST RIGHT to turn then change angle to start... HA
