Hi CameronBrian2120,
Here are a couple of pictures of our outdrive to help you locate the intake and tubing. Now this is a Bravo III but if you have the Alpha Gen II then they are fundamentally the same. The pencil tip is stuck in the very small Speedometer intake hole. Another place to look for a possible problem is where indykoch was referring to, at the plastic connector for the outdrive to transom assembly tubing (we found ours disconnected when we bought her). http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h2...bingroute1.jpg Here's a photo of the speedometer tubing and connector at the outdrive indykoch was saying to check. Yours should be a twist connector, make sure it's firmly coupled. http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h2...ometertube.jpg WetWilly |
Speedometer only working When motor is trimmed wide open
My speedometer only works when I am running at speeds that acquire me to trim the motor but once I slow down enough to lower the motor the speedometer will get stuck and just shows what speed I was going before I trimmed the motor down Is this common. It's a 95 180 talari Mercrusier

Re: Speedometer only working When motor is trimmed wide open
What kind of transducer do you have? Thru hull or mounted on the transom? If its a thru hull it may have become loose in its mounting hole. If its a transom mount, try cleaning the crud from the bottom of the unit.

Re: Speedometer only working When motor is trimmed wide open
I believe it is on the transom because of it working when I trim the motor up but I am confused where it might be on the transom. Because I do not know what it looks like. Thank you for posting to me on it I will get a better look when it is out of water and try to see if I can clean it some how

Re: Speedometer only working When motor is trimmed wide open
I have a Yamaha sterndrive and had a similar problem. The speedo tube connects to the sterndrive and the connection needs a small "O" ring to make the connection secure. Without the "O" ring the speerd only works erradically. I installed a new ring and everything works fine.

Re: Speedometer only working When motor is trimmed wide open
Must be the heat. I completely misread that post & the issue with the speedo. :mallet_on_head:
I agree with Voodoo. It could be a cracked or missing o ring or a small split in the pickup tube. I would remove the tube from the back of the speedo and then using a small compressor, blow air backward thru the line while having someone look for leaks at the outdrive end. Mind you there should be air coming out of the outdrive speedo pickup hole when you do this. I've copied over an old post by WetWilly (see post #1 in this thread) just to show you where the tube runs and where the outdrive speedo hole is. |
Re: Speedometer only working When motor is trimmed wide open
where can I purchase the plastic connector?

Re: Speedometer only working When motor is trimmed wide open
imo - sounds like your tube is getting pinched when you use your trim
