Drive line oil question

Hey fellas,
I have a 5.0L with the drive line oil reservoir at the front of the motor with the oil low, not bad, but definitely below the level. I know the mechanic put in the Mercruiser synthetic blend oil in. My local parts house has a petroleum based marine oil that I can use however it is not the blend. I spoke with a boat mechanic today and he said it would be fine as well as another boat owner. What say you?? I would love to get out on the lake tomorrow but don't want to run the boat at current oil level (which I know needs to be fixed) nor do I want to mix the two if it is not good. Please give me some advise. Thanks

Mixing petroleum based oil with synthetic oil will only cut down the performance and life of the synthetic oil. When you buy a synthetic blend oil you get a mix of mineral & synthetic.

Thanks Mikey,
I did find some Quicksilver Gear Lube at Walmart (online) but I can't tell if it is a synthetic blend or not. How would a person be able to tell, would it say right on the bottle? Thanks.

Yes, it should be marked right on the bottle.

You have the remote resevoir on the engine, it has oil in it?
I don't think you have anything to worry about untill that remote resevoir is emptied...except where the oil went.

Dang! Really?! She's been running a little "off" lately, a little more noise and vibration at higher RPMs I was hoping that was my problem. I do have the reservoir and it is about a quarter of an inch below the bottom line. I have no leaks on my garage floor nor in the bilge so not sure what is going on??

It should not lose oil.
The vibration may be from the drive line.
Maybe a bad prop, bearings and/or leaking seal.

Yeah I figured I had a problem, however, I was hoping it was just a slow leaking seal. :shakehead: I had the whole driveline looked at a year ago and all was well, just goes to show what can happen in a years time.
