Hatch Cover Flies Up

Don't know if anyone else has experienced this. When trailering, my rear hatch flies open, say around 35 MPH. The stingy little straps on each side are almost useless. They pop right out. I suspect air gets under it on the ends between the saet back and the sides of the boat. Only way I can tow is with all the covers on. Hate those snaps after a long hot day. Anyone have any ideas.

Thanks
BG

Re: Hatch Cover Flies Up

Did you try closing the center windshield? It will cause a lot less turbulence inside the boat. If that doesn't work, run a tie down strap from the ski hook to something inside the boat to hold er down. Good luck,

Yeah, I tried closing the center windshield, didn't help. I can lash it down with a ratchet strap, but I was hoping for something a little more elegant. Just wondering why I seem to be the only one with this problem.

Re: Hatch Cover Flies Up

Mine has gas shocks mounted underneath, they seem to hold a little pressure on it.... but then again, I don't think Chuck Norris could lift mine without assistance from the shocks!

Re: Hatch Cover Flies Up

Mine has shocks also, but you're right, it would be pretty hard to lift without them.

I would replace the snaps they are probably worn out. Mine snap tight and stay connected. Definitely want to keep it secured though somehow.

It's done it since day 1. Thought about maybe replacing the snaps with something more positive. Just not sure how much pressure is being exerted and I don't want to risk ripping something apart.

Hey caraudio91...what did you use for a handle and where did you attach it?

Re: Hatch Cover Flies Up

Do you have a cover for the bow area?

My dealer years ago advised me that i shouldn't tow the boat on the highway without this cover on and the windshield closed as he had experiences with the hatch cover flying open when he forgot to do either one of those.

With both of those done the air will only enter the boat around and over the windshield which should not be direct enough to lift the hatch cover even without the snaps attached.

Re: Hatch Cover Flies Up

Thanks for the tip Mosky. Ya know I thought about doing just that, but figured that it wouldn't be enough. It happened the very first time we towed when the boat was brand new. Wouldn't have even known that it happened, but for another motorist catching up to us and waving frantically. It just about ripped the shock mounts right off the cover. Luckily no damage except to the ego. Since then we've just always put all the covers on because it was such a harrowing experience, but my wife hates dealing with the covers. They're made of the same stuff as the seats and they DO NOT STRETCH!

i bought a hatch lock (the kind u have to turn to unlock)and i mounted it on the top side . i used a hole saw and drilled thru top so the lock would line up with the frame...it works great.beins that sun deck lid acts like a airplane wing and lifts up while going down the highway...

Re: Hatch Cover Flies Up

Hmmm.........I guess it's like the latch on the floor locker...a little nervous about drilling through the upholstered deck !

Re: Hatch Cover Flies Up

right but once its in it recesses nicely.better yet does your rear seat flip forward?

bkgoetz 06-14-2012 03:40 PM

Re: Hatch Cover Flies Up

Yes it does. The whole assembly is on hinges

Re: Hatch Cover Flies Up

simple fix then screw a ring mount to the bottom side and use a strap like whats on a tiedown to ancor to floor..so u will have to flip seat forward to unlatch

Re: Hatch Cover Flies Up

Mine has done it once and it was because I didn't have the straps snapped in place. Hasn't done it since
