Have you tried lifting the hatch by hand just a little and pull the bench seat forward? Works for me...

I had some issues with mine also. I checked the connectors from the toggle switch all the way back to the lifts and found alot of corrosion on the grounds. I cleaned all these with a brush and battery terminal cleaner in a shot glass and drilled out the holes a bit on the hatch and bottom bracket to eliminate some binding. I also had my sundeck rehopolstered so I made a new plywood top with aluminum routed into it flush then tapped the holes so the brackets later wouldnt come loose. This made it quite a bit quicker (still not fast) and also dont have to worry later about the brackets. Hope this helps. Also thought about getting in with a dead battery or something I guess Ill have to lay the seat down and unload then pull the pins.
