HELP FOR FRIEND !
A friend just bought a used boat recently,test drove it,all seemed good.(unfortunately it's not a mariah).It's an 18 ft. with a v-6 and an omc outdrive-early 90s model.Yesterday,after running about 15 minutes and at about 3/4 throttle,the engine began over-reving and the boat quit going!Basically my thoughts were a spun prop.There was a smell of burnt rubber coming from the engine compartment like a belt.The temp was in the normal range.shut the boat down for about an hour then tried running it again and it would run at idle and slightly above.We tried this to head back to the landing but after everything warmed back up it quit pulling again.I towed him on in.at the ramp,same thing-will pull at idle before warming back up.I'm still thinking spun prop,but the rubber smell is puzzling me.I'm not that familiar with the omc.
Any input would be much appreciated.Thanks.

A couple years ago I was on my dads boat when something similar happened with that same burnt rubber smell.

If I remember right it was a damaged gimbal.

That sounds like a bad engine coupler. The coupler is a round metal piece on the back of the motor that has rubber "insides". It's a pretty significant repair, which involves removing the engine and outdrive from the boat. Don't ask me how I know about this...

Hey thanks for all the input.That sounds logical.The most puzzling part to me is how it worked to some degree once everything cooled down.Guess it's time to pull the motor/outdrive.wonder how many beer that will take!!
