Fueling back splash

When fueling up gas comes splashing back out. It does not matter how slow I am pumping. What is the problem? Any suggestions?

Check to see if the gas tank vent is plugged or the line to it is pinched. It's the little black thingy usually located on the opposite side of the stern to the gas tank filler cap.

Sometimes water (as difficult as it may sound...) will get into and that essentially plugs the line. On a different boat, I had everyone (if anyone was with me) sit up front too to put a better angle in the boat. I haven't had to do it with the Mariah though.
