saltwater earthing / galvanic corrosion

Hi All,

Hope you can help, just been lifted out for some general maintenance and found that the anodes were literally fizzing...

The only thing that has changed recently is a set of smart tabs added around six weeks ago, so the way I see it I have one of three possible problems.

1. Smart Tabs need to be earthed
2. Mercathode has stopped working
3. Some serious stray current problems in the marina

Has anyone had any similar issues? how would you go about testing the mercathode's working? and should the tabs have any earthing themselves or are their own set of anodes suffiicent (which is what I have now). I'm pretty sure it's an earth issue as it had eaten away at the propspeed and that's ony six weeks old too...

Hoping someone might have suffered and resolved similar issues,

Steve.

Re: Salt Water Earthing

Sorry guys, didn't spend enough time searching the forums lastnight as was in a hurry.

Found a couple of really useful threads that answer my questions about the Mercathode testing and Trim Tabs, have reposted below for anyone finding this thread.

Looks to me like the yard have painted over the mercathode electrode, however I'm overdue a proper test, and with the amount of salinity out here I should really be more proactive anyway!

Was interested to read on the testing that they advised to be careful not to excessively rock the boat when testing, makes me think that being moored in a high traffic / wash area might make the unit ineffective?

Will let you know how I get on, might be worth buying the Merc tester if I can find it...

Steve.
