Incredibly stupid question about water in gasoline.

Hey all,

Aside from the whole ethanol issue, I'm wondering if any of you have ever thought about this as a possible explanation of water in the gas:

On many older Mariahs, the fuel port and fuel tank air outlet are mounted on the transom, just above the swim deck. I've noticed NUMEROUS times that both of these things get heavily splashed with water when stopping quickly, or even on a windy day with whitecaps. With an older boat, is it possible that the rubber seals around the fuel port are not quite water-tight?

I've noticed a number of these types of engineering flaws on my boat -- don't even get me started about the constantly-swamped cooler in the swim deck!

Whaddya think? Could water be seeping in like that? Or am I unjustifiably suspicious?

That is an incredibly stupid question!! ;)

I have no idea if it's a valid concern, but you just gave me one more thing to worry about!!:shakehead:

your"cooler" in the swim deck i think is better used as a wet storage. i think it was designed to get wet. hence the hole in the bottom.

i use the two coolers under the back seats.

and as far as water getting in through the fuel door im pretty sure u would just about have to have it open to get enough water to do anything.

I don't think the fuel door was the concern as much as the fuel vent. I can see water splashing into the vent.

i dont think very much would actually get into the tube and make it to the fuel tank. i think any water that would enter the line would not even make it to the tank and it would probably evaporate before it made it to the tank.

Re: Incredibly stupid question about water in gasoline.

Hello All

I put 50 gals of gas in my tank last sunday, about 1/2 way through the day of boating the engine was sluggish, and missing untill higher speeds. Monday I took the filter/ water seperator off and installed a new one. I took the old filter and dumped it into a glass jar, it was 80 % water. I put a spare filter on the boat to be safe. A mech told me if I have a lot of water , that I should take the float out of the tank and just siphon the water from the bottom of the tank.

Thanks

Yeah... it has a drain hole with a plug, but the plug is basically useless.

I'm not sure what I'd want to store in there, knowing that it's constantly full of lake water. I guess I could keep the supermodels' wet bathing suits in there when we all go skinnydipping.

Wait, no. That never happens.

To you, anyway ;)

I think the original intention was to put stuff like ski gloves, etc when you get back in the boat.

Hey Rdrdon, what do you mean "swimming"? All that moving around is called work . We just throw on a ski vest and float around on our backs Otter style while balancing the brew on our chest (ladies use their tummys ).

On my lake we have the 'north end.' Its about 3-4 1/2 feet deep. Heres the gang playing beer pong aka "Port O Pong." Its pretty cool. The amount of people that ask if they can also play. Its good. I'll have to see if I've got a picture of the 6ft diameter hampster ball we have. THAT is a HUGE hit down there. We really don't use it, but all the kids down there do. You can barely see the 20ft Ski Centurion tied up to me!! Its got a 200HP Mercury on it. That thing flies. We call it the rowboat on roids...

You sound like me except we invert the ski vest and put our legs through the arm holes and snap it up front and "sit" in the water holding a rope in one hand and an adult beverage with the other. Only use the rope cause I usually do this out in the middle of the lake where most of the idiots don't come by. Looks funny as heck (kinda like a big lumpy diaper) but you sit upright and lean your elbow on your hip and the beverage sits just above the water line. :D

It's the no stress method.

Hey 94z190talari,

That sound really cool, we're going to have to try the inverted vest next time we go out. I'll just have to remind everyone after they've had a few brews, it's not a real diaper..... :eek_animated:

I always put an extra pair of water shoes in there. never know if you will need them. I use the cooler under the front seat in the bow for drinks.
