What are these senders on the transom?
2 Attachment(s)
I'm going to have to relocate these if I want to add smart tabs. Does anyone know what they are for? The port one looks like a sender for a fish finder that the PO kept, and the starboard unit looks kind of like a torpedo. Any one else have these?

Re: What are these senders on the transom?
The one on the port side is a speedo unit and the one on the starboard side is a fish finder unit. They could have both been used for a fish finder unit that had a speed function. You may have to simply trace the wires back & see if they are hooked up to something.

Re: What are these senders on the transom?
It didn't even occur to me that they could both be for a fish finder. From the wiring that was left behind it appeared to be a pretty substantial unit. Definitely not a stock speedo pickup then? I didn't think it would be since it appears to have the standard alpha pickup in the drive unit.
Do you know if fish finder pickups are fairly universal if I ever decided that I want to keep them? If not I might just hack them off.... |

Hi stereoman405, Do you have an Odometer on your dash? If you do, then the Port sender is for the Odometer and the Water Temp so you may want to consider relocating it instead of hacking it off.... I recently purchased the same sender to replace our broken off one. WetWilly |

Yes, the little counter timey thingy (which btw IS a technical term in my book) has a paddle wheel on the transom that supposedly measures miles or nautical miles. Mine never worked, so I "hacked" it off and put on Smart Tabs, much the same as you're doing.
It's difficult to tell in your picture, does one of those transducers have a paddle wheel? If so, that's the counter thingy on the dash. |

I guess I better do a little more digging. I just finally got the whole thing put back together after cleaning up and repairing all the little electrical gremlins. I really don't want to open her up again to start tracing wires. Maybe I'll unscrew them and wire tie them above the water line and see if it disables any do-dads. EDIT: I just noticed you said you put Smart Tabs on. You look like you have roughly the same length / weight boat as mine. What kind of improvement did you see? I was just getting ready to pull the trigger on a set but I'm nervous taht I'm a little big for them. |
Re: What are these senders on the transom?
if you remove them, make sure and seal up the screw holes with some 3m 5200 and let it properly cure before dunking it in the water again.
to be honest i can never figure out the damn trip counter, if it's truly counting nautical miles, mine must be way off! It's pretty useless, if you ask me. Especially if you've got GPS. |
